Shear Resistance
Shear Area (cl.6.2.6(3))
Definition of terms
A is the cross-sectional area
b is the overall section breadth
h is the overall section depth
hwis the overall web depth (measured between flanges)
r is the root radius
tfis the flange thickness
twis the web thickness (taken as the minimum value if the
web is not of constant thickness)
h= 1.0 (from M’siaNA)

Local Buckling
Background:
•For efficiency, steel structural members are generally
composed of relatively thin elements (i.e. thicknesses
substantially less than other cross-sectional
dimensions)
•Although favourable in terms of overall structural
efficiency, the slender nature of these thin elements
results in susceptibility to local instabilities (buckling)
under compressive stress, which must be considered in
design.

Cross section classification
The classifications from BS 5950 of plastic, compact, semi compact and
slender are replaced
in Eurocode 3 with Class 1 Class 2 Class 3 andClass 4 respectively

Combined Bending and Shear Resistance
Maximum shear force at maximum moment
=VEd = 558-(186x3)kN = 0
0.5Vc,Rd = 0.5x 1215kN = 607.5kN
Since 0.5Vc,Rd ≥ Ved, the combined bending and shear resistance is OK.
