17. A bus left Kisumu for Nairobi at an average speed of 60km/h. After 1½hours another car left Kisumu
for Nairobi along the same route at an average speed of 100km/hr .If the distance between Kisumu and
Nairobi is 500km, determine
(a)(i) The distance the car travelled to catch up with the bus. (3marks)
(ii) Immediately the car caught up with the bus, stopped for 25minutes. Find the new average speed
of which the car travelled in order to reach Nairobi at the same time as the bus (to the nearest
whole number) (4marks)
(b) Two passengers train A and B 240m apart are travelling at 164km/h and 88km/h respectively
towards each other on a straight railway line. Train A is 150m long while B is 100m long.
Determine the time in seconds that elopes before the two trains completing pass each other.

19. Three business partners Bela, Joan and Trinity contributed ksh 112, 000, ksh 128,000 and ksh
210,000 respectively to start a business .They agreed to share the profits as follows;
(i) 30% to be shared equally
(ii) 30% to be shared in the ratio of their contribution.
(iii) 40% to be retained for running of the business.
If at the end of the year, the business realized a profit of 1,350,000 calculate:
(a) The amount of money retained for the running of the business at the end of the year. (1mark)
(b) The difference between the amount of money received by Trinity and Bela. (6marks)
(c) Express Joan’s share as a percentage of the total amount of money shared between the three

22. A company packs fruit jam in cylindrical tins of radius 5cm and height [Link] tins are then
packed into a rectangular cartoon each measuring 60cm long, 30cm wide and 30cm high.
(a) Determine the maximum number of tins that can be packed into one carton. (2marks)
(b) An empty carton and an empty tin weighs 560g and 300g respectively .The jam packed in one
tin weighs 990g.A pickup which can carry a maximum of 600kg is used to transport the jam
.Determine the maximum number of cartons that a pickup can carry. (4marks)
(c) The factory delivered a pick up full of cartons of jam to a retailer .The factory sells one carton to a
retailor for ksh [Link] retailer sells each tin at sh 110.
Calculate the profit made by the retailer. (4marks)
