chapter -5

Output devices are essential components of a computer system that provide information in hard copy (printers) or soft copy (monitors). Common output devices include CRT and TFT-LCD monitors, as well as impact and non-impact printers, each with distinct characteristics and applications. Impact printers, such as dot matrix and daisy wheel printers, are generally slower but cheaper, while non-impact printers like ink-jet and laser printers offer higher quality and speed.

Output Device

CHAPTER-5
Output device are those device of computer system that supplies information or result either
in the form of hard copy (printer) or soft copy (Monitor). Some of the common output
devices are as follow.
Monitor
Printer
Monitor:- It is an output device. The result soft copy display on the monitor. Monitors
comes in two types-
CRT (Cathode Ray Tube)
TFT-LCD (Thin Film Transistor-Liquid Crystal Display)
CRT Monitor- A VDU or CRT monitor is very similar to a television and its size (as in the case
of TV) is measured in diagonal length of the screen monitors are available in 12”,14”, 15”, 17”,
19” & even in 21” size. It shows text, color monitors are more costly than black and white
monitors.
TFT-LCD Monitor- It is the flat panel type of monitor found on notebook PC. TFT (Thin
Film Transistor)-LCD is a variant of liquid crystal display (LCD) which used TFT technology
to improve image quality. TFT-LCD is one type of active matrix LCD. It is used in
television, Flat panel displays, and projector.
Printer:-
Printer is an output device which is primarily used for producing output in the paper in user
readable form. The printed output is called hard copy. The printers are classified into two
categories based on the technology used for printing.
❖Impact Printer
❖Non-Impact Printer
Impact Printer:
1. It makes provision for hitting paper while printing.
2. Line printer, Dot matrix printer, Daisy wheel printer come under
Impact printer.
3. Speed of Impact printer is usually measured in pages per minute.
4. It varieties of font, layouts, drawing can be better printed.
5. Cost of Impact printer is low.
6. It mostly used bank, telephone office, etc.
Non-Impact Printer:
1. It makes provision for without hitting paper while printing.
2. Laser printer, Inkjet printer, comes under Non-impact printer.
3. Speed of non-impact printer is usually measured in page per
second.
4. Quality of printing is better.
5. Cost of non-impact printer is high.
6. These are mostly used with personal computers.
Dot Matrix Printer:
1. This type of printer uses a special heat sensitive paper. These
papers have a special heat sensitive coating.
2. A character is printed with a matrix of dots.
3. A printer head consists of 5x7 or 7x9 matrix of tiny heating
elements.
4. The heating element is heated by electric current.
5. To print a character the printing head is moved first to the correct
character position.
6. Printer speed of about 20 character per second (CPS) only.
Daisy Wheel Printer:
•In Daisy wheel printer, the characters are embossed in the
arms of a wheel called Daisy Wheel.
•In this printer there is only one strike hammer. Like type
writer, an inked ribbon.
•It will be kept between the paper and hammer.
•To print a character the arm will be rotated to bring the
character between the ribbon and the hammer.
•The hammer strikes the arm making an impression of the
character on the paper.
•Print quality is good.
•Printing speed of daisy wheel printer is very slow.
•The printing speed will be between 25 to60 characters per
minute.
•Speed measured in character per second.
Ink-Jet Printer:
•Ink-jet printers use electrostatic ink in it.
•The printer head has a specially designed nozzle.
•It sends small droplets of ink at high speed.
•Each ink droplet is deflected by an electrostatic plate placed
just outside the nozzle.
•In a color ink-jet printer, three nozzles are present to inject
three different colored in red, blue and green colored inks
are used in these nozzles.
These colors mix together to produce various colors.
Laser Printer:
It can be print one page at a time.
It can be use laser technology to print the first copy and copier
technology to output additional copies.
It is capable of producing very high quality print out very quickly.
It also offers wide selection of fonts.
It can be operates at a speed of 4 to 20 pages per minute.
In a laser printer, the signal coming from the computer is sent to a laser
beam in the laser printer.
The laser printer has high print density.
It can print normally at densities of the order of 300 dots per inch.
High quality printers can print up to 1200 dots per inch.
Speed is measured in pages per second.
