An Introduction to Quantum Computing

Study Notes

Overview
Quantum computing uses physical principles of quantum mechanics to process information. Instead of
relying only on classical bits, quantum computers use quantum bits, or qubits.

Qubits
A classical bit is either 0 or 1. A qubit can exist in a quantum state involving both basis states until
measurement. The state is described by probability amplitudes, which determine measurement
probabilities.

Superposition
Superposition allows a qubit to be represented as a combination of its computational basis states. It does
not simply mean that a quantum computer evaluates every possible answer independently and then reads
them all out; measurement produces a specific classical outcome.

Entanglement
Entanglement creates correlations between quantum systems that cannot generally be reproduced by
treating the systems as independent classical variables. Entangled qubits are an important resource for
many quantum algorithms and communication protocols.

Quantum Gates and Circuits

Quantum algorithms are commonly expressed as circuits made from quantum gates. Gates manipulate
qubit states through reversible transformations, followed by measurements that convert quantum
information into classical results.

Applications and Challenges

Potential applications include simulation of quantum systems, certain optimization and search tasks,
cryptography-related algorithms, and some forms of machine learning. Major challenges include noise,
decoherence, error correction, hardware scaling, and the difficulty of designing useful algorithms.
