Contact Process

The contact process involves the conversion of sulfur and oxygen into sulfur dioxide, followed by the oxidation of sulfur dioxide to sulfur trioxide using vanadium (V) oxide at 450 degrees Celsius. Sulfur trioxide is then reacted with concentrated sulfuric acid to produce oleum, which is subsequently reacted with water to yield sulfuric acid. This process is crucial for the industrial production of sulfuric acid.

CONTACT PROCESS

Sulfur and oxygen are mixed to give sulfur dioxide

S(s) + O(g) -SO₂

Air is introduced again to sulfur dioxide at a temperature of 450 degrees Celsius

And passed over a reaction vessel containing vanadium (v) oxide and sulfur trioxide is produced

2SO₂ + O₂ -2SO₃

The sulfur trioxide is not directly passed through water as the reaction is violent and produces a
thick mist

So instead the sulfur trioxide is passed over concentrated sulfuric acid to produce oleum

SO₃ + H₂SO₄ -H₂S₂O₇

Then the oleum is then reacted with water to produce sulfuric acid

H₂S₂O₇ + H₂O – 2H₂SO₄
