Assignment 1 – Mathematical Problems (Solved)

1. A(3,2,9), B(-5,11,5), C(4,0,-7)

AB = B − A = (-8, 9, -4)

AC = C − A = (1, -2, -16)

Dot product AB·AC = 38

|AB| = √161 , |AC| = √261

Angle BAC ≈ 79°

Area of triangle = 1/2 |AB × AC| ≈ 100.7

2. Walking problem

First displacement: 350 m at 30° east of north

Components: North = 303.1 m , East = 175 m

Second displacement: 175 m east

Total components: East = 350 m , North = 303.1 m

Resultant displacement ≈ 463 m

Direction ≈ 49° east of north

Total distance walked = 525 m

3. Dimensional analysis

(i) v = u² + at² → Incorrect (dimensions inconsistent)

(ii) F = mv²/r → Correct (dimension = MLT■²)

4. Electron motion

Stage1 distance ≈ 0.0599 m

Stage2 distance ≈ 159.9 m

Stage3 distance ≈ 0.012 m

Total distance ≈ 160 m

6. Cap thrown upward

Time to highest point ≈ 1.48 s

Maximum height ≈ 10.7 m

Total flight time ≈ 2.96 s

7. Vector A components

|A| = √(25²+40²) ≈ 47.17

Angle with x-axis ≈ 58°

11. Projectile

u = 5v at maximum height → cosθ = 1/5

θ ≈ 78.5°

12. Average acceleration

∆v = (-6,0,2)

a_avg = (-1.5, 0, 0.5) m/s²

|a_avg| ≈ 1.58 m/s²

Angle with x-axis ≈ 161°

13. Elevator tension

When accelerating up ≈ 31,270 N

When slowing ≈ 24,350 N

14. Kinetic friction coefficient

µk ≈ 0.61

15. Block friction

Normal force N = 18.5 N

Maximum static friction = 7.4 N

For applied forces 8 N, 10 N, 12 N → kinetic friction ≈ 4.63 N
