Tutorial-III: Heat Transfer (CH250)

21-01-2026
1. Calculate the critical radius of insulation for asbestos (k= 0.17 W/m2.K)
surrounding a pipe and exposed to a room air at 293 K with h = 3.0 W/(m 2.K).
Calculate the heat loss from a 473 K. 50 mm diameter pipe when covered with the
critical radius of insulation and without insulation. Would any fibre glass insulation
having thermal conductivity of 0.04 W/(m.K) cause decrease in heat transfer?

2. A steam pipe with 100 mm ID and 110 mm OD is covered with an insulating

material having thermal conductivity of 1.0 W/(m2.K). The steam temperature is
473 K and ambient temperature is 293 K. Taking the convective heat transfer
coefficient between the insulation surface and air as 8.0 W/(m2.K), find the
critical radius of insulation. For this value (rc), calculate the heat loss per meter
of pipe and outer surface temperature. Neglect the resistance of pipe wall.

3. Asbestos insulation (k = 0.20 W/m K) is put on a steel pipe (1.6 cm ID, 2 cm

OD). Hot water at 90 °C flows through the pipe and the heat transfer coefficient
(hi) is 500 W/m2K. Heat is lost from the outer surface by natural convection to
surrounding air at 30 °C and the heat transfer coefficient (ho) is 10 W/m2K.
Calculate the heat loss rate per meter length for insulation thickness of 0, 0.5, 1,
2, 3, 4 and 5 cm. plot the result and discuss the variation obtained.

3. A steel hall 50 mm in diameter and initially at uniform temperature of 723 K is

suddenly placed in a controlled environment in which temperature is maintained
at 373 K. Calculate the time required for a ball to attain a temperature of 423 K.
Data: k for steel = 35 W/(m.K), Cp for steel = 0.46 kJ/(kg.K). Convection heat
transfer coefficient, h = 10 W/(m2.K) and ρ of steel = 7800 kg/m3.

4. A steel ball having a radius of 25.4 mm is at a uniform temperature of 700 K.

It is suddenly plugged into a medium whose temperature is held constant at 394.3
K. Assume a convective coefficient of 11.36 W/(m2.K). Calculate the temperature
of the ball after one hour. The average physical properties are k = 43.3 W/(m.K),
ρ = 7849 kg/m3 and Cp = 0.4606 kJ/(kg.K).
5. The average heat transfer coefficient for flow of 373 K air over a flat plate
is measured by observing temperature time history of a 30 mm thick copper slab
exposed to 373 K air. In one test run, the initial temperature of the plate was
483 K, and in 5 minutes the temperature decreased by 40 K. Calculate the heat
transfer coefficient for this case.
Take: ρ = 9000 kg/m3, Cp = 0.38 kJ/(kg.K) and k = 370 W/(m.K).
