Reflective Overview

It could be said that going through the Analytical Writing Program 3 has been an

invaluable learning experience for me, one that will be of great advantage for me while

attending advanced writing classes. The way I approach academic writing has changed

drastically since enrolling in this class. By analyzing all the texts from the coursebook, I was

able to create a question for each essay that could be addressed by all the texts that I selected

and could help me develop my essays. The annotation skill that I learned in this class came in

handy for this purpose. In the S&S Essay, I described the role of bots and algorithms, as

several course texts talked about it, so this was the common topic I found among them. In the

Argument essay, I advanced a clear claim on the subject that how far is social media

responsible for the perils of political polarization for the democracy. I developed my

argument, structuring my body paragraphs around my claim, using evidences from multiple

sources.

In this course I was pushed to write more academically advanced essays instead of

old-style high school essays. Through this course, I not only improved my ability to read

closely and understand other writers' arguments, but I also learned how to incorporate ideas

from other sources into my own writing, citing according to the UCSD Academic Integrity

Principles. Apart from improving my analytical skills, I also sharpened my ability to

formulate a compelling level-3 question or claim that guides my writing. I not only organized

my essays very well on a global level which can help the reader to follow the essay easily,

but I also tried to apply the new writing principles that I learned in this class, e.g. old-to-new

principle and actor/action principle, in my essays, improving the flow of my essays. I also

used quotations from the texts in the coursebook where it deemed necessary and also cited

the sources according to the UCSD Academic Integrity Principles. On the other hand, I might

not be able to construct a very good body paragraph that totally match up with my claim in

my argument essay, due to the bad structural organization of the body paragraph. I think I

could also improve some of the vocabulary I used to make my essays more effective and

concise. As I work to improve my writing skills, I aim to overcome the weaknesses I

currently possess as a writer.
