effectively.
Discussion:
A good speech not only depends on its content but
it also depends on how you deliver the message,
how you present yourself in front of the audience
and how you communicate with them.

according to the book of Stephen Lucas,
“A good speech delivery means that
“The Art of Public Speaking” you are able to present your message
in a clear, coherent, and interesting
way.”
Exactly, in delivering an effective speech, there
are a lot of things to consider and that’s what
we’re going to discuss today.
So, there are 6 principles to consider to deliver an
effective speech, and what are those? Everyone
please read. The 6 principles are:
1. Articulation
2. Modulation
3. Stage presence
4. Facial expression
5. Gestures and movement
6. Rapport with the audience
Do you have any idea what is articulation? Sir, articulation is the pronunciation of
a word.
Correct! Articulation is the clear and
understandable pronunciation of words.
Try to say, “who wants to eat?” Who wants to eat?
What do you notice when you speak or make a
sound? Our lips and tongue move when we
produce a sound.
Very good. When we speak there are movements
of the lips, tongue, teeth, the top of the mouth or
the palate and also in the respiratory system.
Next, modulation. This is how we control our
voice when we speak.
For example, you speak informal with your
friends and sometimes you don’t care what voice
you should make because they’re your friends. But
when you speak with your teacher, you use calm
tone and speak slowly right?
So, modulation is the ability to control our vocal
tone, adjustment of pace, pitch, power, and
volume.
In speech controlling voice is very important as
we don’t want to listen to someone who had a
crack voice or very high pitch when speaking.
Next is the Stage presence. Do you have any idea
what is this? Your confidence to share and speak in
front of the audience, sir.
Indeed! It is the confidence to speak in public.
This is crucial so that we can deliver a message
clearly in a way that audience will understand it.
We need to get the attention of the audience.
Down to the 4th principle, facial expression.
Why do you think this is needed when delivering a
speech?
It is boring when the speaker has no
expression at all.
You are right. A smile is a good start to speak with
your audience. The audience will be bored if you
have a stoic face while delivering your speech.
The next principle is the gestures and movements.

Hand gestures are frequently used to
highlight certain parts of speech and to
strengthen the speaker’s message.
Yes, that’s right. In speech, we need to look
presentable in front of our audience and to not
make them annoyed by weird gestures and
movements we’ll make. This is the non-verbal
communication with the audience.
And lastly, the rapport with the audience. Is
everyone aware of what rapport is?

So, for the benefit of everyone. A rapport is a trust
or connection between the speaker and audience.
For the audience to listen attentively, you need to
build a connection with them.
So, does everyone understand the principle of
good public speaking?
That’s good to hear. Now, let’s have an activity.
