How to Manage Summer
Health & Safety Guide
A practical guide for staying safe and healthy during hot weather, with emphasis on hydration, heat
illness prevention, sun protection, food safety and emergency response.
1. Prepare for Hot Weather
• Check the weather forecast and plan outdoor activities for cooler parts of the day.
• Keep drinking water available and carry a bottle when going outdoors.
• Wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothing and use a hat or other shade when appropriate.
• Make sure homes, vehicles and workplaces have adequate ventilation or cooling.
2. Prevent Heat Illness
• Take regular breaks in a cool or shaded place during strenuous activity.
• Drink fluids regularly rather than waiting until you feel very thirsty.
• Never leave children, older adults or pets unattended inside a parked vehicle.
• Watch for heavy sweating, weakness, headache, dizziness, nausea or confusion.
3. Sun Protection
• Limit prolonged direct sun exposure, especially around midday.
• Use broad-spectrum sunscreen as directed on the product label and reapply as needed.
• Protect eyes with suitable sunglasses and use shade whenever practical.
4. Food & Water Safety
• Keep perishable foods refrigerated and avoid leaving cooked food in the heat for long periods.
• Drink safe water and use clean containers.
• Wash hands before preparing or eating food.
5. If Someone Becomes Unwell
• Move the person to a cool or shaded location.
• Loosen unnecessary clothing and cool the person with appropriate methods.
• If the person is confused, faints, has a seizure, has very hot skin, or rapidly worsens, seek emergency
medical help immediately.
