6th Class Computer Basics
Teaching Guide & Class Notes
Chapter 1: What is a Computer? (■■■■■■■■ ■■■■ ■■?)
• Definition: An electronic machine that accepts raw data as input, processes it, and gives useful results as
output.
• Data: Raw facts (numbers, words, images). Example: 2 and 3.
• Processing: Working on data. Example: 2 + 3.
• Information: Meaningful output. Example: 5.
• Main Characteristics: High Speed, 100% Accuracy, Large Storage capacity, and never gets tired (Diligence).
Chapter 2: Hardware vs Software (■■■■■■■■■ ■■ ■■■■■■■■■)
• Hardware: Physical parts of a computer that you can see and touch.
- Input Devices: Keyboard, Mouse, Scanner (used to enter data).
- Output Devices: Monitor, Printer, Speakers (used to show results).
- Storage Devices: Hard Disk, Pen Drive (used to save work).
• Software: A set of instructions or programs that tells hardware what to do. You cannot touch it.
- System Software: Operating System like Windows, Android (runs the machine).
- Application Software: MS Paint, MS Word, Games (used for specific tasks).
Chapter 3: Computer Memory (■■■■■■■■ ■■■■■■)
• RAM (Random Access Memory): Primary/Short-term memory. It holds data temporarily while the computer is
ON. Data is lost when turned OFF.
• ROM (Read Only Memory): Permanent memory. It holds critical startup instructions. Data is never lost.
• Units: Bit (0 or 1) → Byte (8 Bits) → Kilobyte (KB) → Megabyte (MB) → Gigabyte (GB).
Chapter 4: Windows Operating System & Files
• Desktop: The main screen that appears after turning on the computer.
• Icons: Small pictures on the desktop representing files or programs.
• File: A collection of information saved with a name (e.g., a drawing or a text letter).
• Folder: A digital container used to store and organize multiple files.
