FADE IN:
SCENE 1
LINDA
(to herself)
Why can't I get this chorus
right?
Doesn't play.
LINDA
(muttering)
Maybe it's the wrong [Link]
the wrong story.
ON SCREEN – FRIEND
FRIEND
(smiling)
Please tell me you've slept.
LINDA
Sleep's a luxury. I'm still
wrestling with the middle eight.
2.
FRIEND
Anything I can do?
LINDA
Yeah. Time travel me to a version
where I'm not behind on rent and
a deadline.
Friend softens.
FRIEND
You'll get [Link] always do.
SCENE 2
CUT TO:
BILL
You dropped this.
LINDA
Thanks.
LINDA (CONT'D)
Hey. Can I help you?
BILL
I'm looking to rent a rehearsal
space.
LINDA
Okay. Just wait by the desk.I'll
be over in a minute.
3.
BILL
Sure.
LINDA
Sorry for the [Link] is the
space for?
BILL
Self-tapes... mostly.
LINDA
Studio A should work for that.
LINDA (CONT'D)
What day do you need it?
BILL
Next Monday.
LINDA
Alright. That works.
LINDA (CONT'D)
Do you have a membership?
BILL
No.
LINDA
We'll fix that.
LINDA (CONT'D)
Name? Address?
BILL
Bill Day. 191 Crescent Drive.
LINDA
You're booked for Studio A next
Monday.
BILL
Thanks.
CUT TO:
4.
SCENE 3
LINDA
You're two hours late for your
booking.
BILL
I'm [Link] got
[Link] lost track of
time.
LINDA
You could've called.
BILL
I know.
LINDA
Studio A is gone. I had to give
it to someone else.
BILL
Is anything else available?
LINDA
Studio B is free.
BILL
Isn't that the bigger room?
LINDA
It [Link] lighting too.A few
different lighting setups.
BILL
I'll take that space.
LINDA
Have fun.
BILL
Thanks.
5.
LINDA
Second door on the left.
BILL
Thanks.
CUT TO:
SCENE 5
LINDA
Pause. Don't bulldoze
[Link] the [Link] speak.
LINDA (CONT'D)
The moment matters. Not just the
line— the breath between.
CO-WORKER
Hey—reminder: rent's due Monday.
SCENE 6A
BILL (O.S.)
Déjà vu?
She turns.
LINDA
You again.
BILL
[Link] ferry delays.
LINDA
I just came from teaching a
lesson at the [Link]
[Link] clue when the next one's
coming.
BILL
Next one's in an hour.
LINDA
That hat is... something else.
LINDA (CONT'D)
It was crooked. Now it's... less
tragic. (beat)I've been writing a
[Link] hat—and that jacket—
could work.
BILL
What's it about?
LINDA
An actor wrestling with
[Link] the world.
BILL
But...What's it really about?
LINDA
It started with someone playing
everyone but herself. Now I
think... it's about being afraid
of being seen.
BILL
That's [Link] real.
LINDA
It's also [Link] maybe that's
okay.
7.
A pause.
LINDA (CONT'D)
Would you read it?
BILL
Sure.
LINDA
Been meaning to ask...What's in
that bag?
BILL
This?
LINDA
Yes.
BILL
[Link] them for an
audition.
LINDA
Put them on.
BILL
Right now?
LINDA
Yes.
Then grabs a pair of glasses and a scarf from the bag and
puts them on.
BILL
You should try them too.
Bill notices.
He says nothing.
8.
SCENE 7
Anita and Bill (sharp, quietly intense) sit with coffee cups
and a script.
BILL
I'm reading your [Link]
lead's journey [Link]'s
messy—but compelling.
LINDA
Messy was kind of the point.
BILL
But the Mumbai scene— everyone's
speaking perfect English.
LINDA
Because I don't speak [Link] I
fake it, it'll show.
BILL
Then don't fake it. (beat)Let me
[Link]'s her [Link] it
shape [Link] in translation.
LINDA
[Link] me something?
BILL
Sure, I will.
CUT TO:
SCENE 8
BILL
Like I was saying on the phone...
What if we layer in more language
through music?
LINDA
I worry it'll feel performative.
Like a borrowed identity.
BILL
What if... her mother's lullaby
starts in English, then shifts to
Hindi?
LINDA
Wouldn't that confuse the
audience?
BILL
Maybe. But emotion translates
faster than words.
LINDA
[Link] could land.
BILL
Why this story, Anita?
Then answers.
LINDA
My mom was a dancer. She escaped
through it. (beat) She performed
in a tiny theatre group. I'd
stage fake plays in our garage.
She'd bring me props from thrift
stores.
BILL
Nice.
10.
LINDA
I can't really find a studio
that's inexpensive to record
music.
BILL
Why are we stuck paying for a
studio?
LINDA
Because it's a studio. You need
space, isolation... basic setup.
BILL
Or we keep it [Link]
Tools.A couple of mics. (beat)And
the whole city becomes the room.
LINDA
You're saying... record out
there?
BILL
[Link] [Link]
song, a new spot.
LINDA
Like... under a [Link] the
park.
BILL
So... what do you think?
Anita smiles.
LINDA
(excited)
I think it could [Link]'s do
it.
LINDA
You'll run it? Produce?
BILL
Me?
11.
LINDA
Yeah, you.
BILL
Yes, I would.
SCENE 9
BILL
[Link] alright?
LINDA
Three weeks of [Link]
[Link] is what Marcus
decided it's worth.
BILL
That's... insulting.
LINDA
He says the studio's broke. And
the "exposure" helps us, too.
BILL
Exposure doesn't cover groceries.
LINDA
If I push back, I lose the space.
And this is the only place I can
rehearse.
BILL
Where is he?
LINDA
In there. Probably pitching the
space to someone who can pay full
price.
She folds the check carefully and slips it into her [Link]
starts down the hallway.
LINDA (CONT'D)
Bill— Don't.
He pauses.
BILL
I'm just going to talk.
SCENE 10
MARCUS
If this is about her paycheck...
it's studio [Link]
starts small.
BILL
Not when they're carrying half
your schedule. She's subbing,
mentoring, [Link]'s not
"small."
MARCUS
She's lucky to have a place like
this. You know how many people
would kill for stage time?
13.
BILL
She's not here for favors. She's
building something real... and
giving more than she gets.
A tense pause.
MARCUS
You her agent now?
BILL
I'm someone who sees her
[Link] so do your students.
MARCUS
Fine. We'll give a [Link]
that's on you if she starts
expecting more.
BILL
She doesn't have to expect it.
She's already earned it.
He walks out.
SCENE 15
BILL
Jack.
Jack freezes.
JACK
She send you?
BILL
She doesn't need to.
JACK
She's been ignoring me.I deserve
a conversation.
BILL
You don't get to decide what she
owes you.
JACK
You don't know anything about us.
BILL
I know [Link] I know this—
this isn't [Link]'s control.
Jack twitches.
JACK
Tell her I'm done.
NEIGHBOR
Should I call someone?
BILL
Yeah. He was trespassing.
CUT TO:
SCENE 16
LINDA
You okay?
15.
BILL
Yeah.
LINDA
You didn't have to get involved.
BILL
He was on the [Link]
intent. That's danger.
LINDA
I'm used to handling things
quietly.
BILL
And getting hurt quietly?
LINDA
I called the [Link]'re
filing a report.I'm applying for
a restraining order in the
morning.
BILL
Good.I'll go with you.
LINDA
Sure.
He nods.
CUT TO:
SCENE 17
BILL
I've been thinking... What if we
rework some of the songs?Add
spoken-word [Link] a
little [Link] more
contemporary.
LINDA
A rap?
BILL
Not [Link] a few places.
It could make it feel [Link]
current.
LINDA
This story isn't about trends.
BILL
It's not about [Link]'s about
reaching people.
LINDA
The songs already say what they
need to say.
BILL
Do they? Or are we making the
audience do all the work?
BILL (CONT'D)
Don't you want it to stand out?
LINDA
They remember honesty.
BILL
So you'd rather it be "real" than
noticed?
LINDA
If we start forcing poetry slams
and rap breaks into places they
don't belong... it stops being
her voice. (beat) This isn't just
about the music, is it?
BILL
No.
17.
A long silence.
BILL (quietly)
I'm behind on rent. My dad's care
facility raised rates again. This
show— if it sells— could fix
everything.
LINDA
And you think changing it will do
that?
BILL
I think making it accessible
gives it a better chance.
LINDA
I wrote this from the inside. If
we compromise that... we
compromise everything.
BILL
Then maybe we're building two
different shows.
CUT TO:
SCENE 19
BILL
Hey.
LINDA
You're late.
BILL
I'm not here to pitch remixes or
spoken word.I just wanted to say
I was wrong.
LINDA
Is that a tattoo?
BILL
Yeah. I needed to remember what
the show was really about.
A beat.
BILL (CONT'D)
I just want to be back on the
show. I want to show up
differently— for the work, and
for you.
LINDA
You still believe in the show?
BILL
More than ever.
A pause.
LINDA
No [Link] rap breaks.
BILL
Deal.
LINDA
Then [Link]'ve got work to do.
LINDA
[Link] is... a lot of look.
Bill enters.
BILL
On three?
LINDA
Great.I'm glued into it.
BILL
Don't scalp me.
BILL
One... two...
CUT TO:
SCENE 21
LINDA
It should land on the downbeat.
BILL
That breath is [Link] sets
up the release.
BILL
Well?
LINDA
They're making an [Link]
producers in London.
20.
BILL
That's incredible.
LINDA
It is. But— (reads) They want new
[Link] staging.
BILL
New team?
LINDA
Yeah. (beat) They want [Link] not
you.
BILL
After everything?
LINDA
I told them I needed time.I
didn't say yes.
BILL
But you didn't say no.
LINDA
Bill... this could give the show
a future.
A beat.
Something shifts.
LINDA
What am I supposed to do?I can't
just start over.I've been doing
this for too long.
BILL
I'm just saying— sit for a
second. Make sure this is
actually what you want.
LINDA
Sit for a second?
LINDA (CONT'D)
What— I sit for a second and
suddenly I'm 30? Or I just stay
stuck— same clients nobody likes
and work I don't even like— Her
voice cracks with frustration.
LINDA (CONT'D)
And I hate my job... and what— I
just end up hating my life?
Silence.
That lands.
BILL
[Link]— come here. (quietly) I'm
not saying any of [Link]...
come on.
He reaches her.
Still overwhelmed.
LINDA
I'm just gonna do the interview.
See what they say.
SCENE 23
MONTAGE –
BILL (O.S.)
Hey.
She turns.
LINDA
Didn't expect to see you in the
neighborhood.
BILL
Didn't expect you back in it.
LINDA
London didn't feel right.
BILL
That's huge.
LINDA
It felt like failure.
BILL
(softly)
Actually... I've been working on
something too.
23.
LINDA
Oh?
BILL
A solo [Link]
[Link] now I'm
stuck.
LINDA
Been there.
BILL
I could use your perspective.
LINDA
Why now?
BILL
Because I saw you protect
something [Link] I want to do
that, too.
LINDA
Tomorrow?
BILL
Tomorrow.
CUT TO:
SCENE 24
LINDA
This monologue— the punchline
lands too [Link] the silence
linger first.
BILL
So stretch the tension?
LINDA
Exactly.
24.
LINDA (CONT'D)
And this line— "I wore my
brother's blazer, sleeves still
pinned inside."That's [Link]
cut it?
BILL
Felt too self-aware.
LINDA
That's what makes it real.
BILL
I've rewritten this five times.
Each version drifts further from
the truth.
LINDA
Just keep working on it.
BILL
If this goes anywhere...I should
probably credit [Link]-writer?
LINDA
Let's finish it first.
BILL
Still... I don't want to repeat
old patterns.
LINDA
Let's make it good.
SCENE 25
BILL
Okay— opening monologue...
LINDA
You look like David Bowie.
He twirls.
BILL
This is expressive chaos.
LINDA
Don't— touch— the tech.
BILL
I labeled it.
LIGHTS STROBE.
SCENE 26
Warm light.
BILL
The producer saw our showcase
[Link] it's raw— but
compelling.
26.
LINDA
Seriously?
BILL
Wants a private [Link] him
and his team.
LINDA
That's big.
BILL
Yeah.
SCENE 27
Bill and Anita sit on the floor, backs against the piano.
BILL
I didn't choke during the
monologue.
LINDA
You didn't.
BILL
It actually... worked?
LINDA
More than worked.
A shift.
She sets down her tea, pulls out a program and her phone.
LINDA (CONT'D)
[Link] [Link]
[Link] mention of me.
BILL
Shit.
LINDA
You said you'd fix it.
BILL
I [Link] moved fast.I wasn't
paying attention.
27.
LINDA
[Link] didn't see it.
(beat)And I've spent too long
trying to be heard without
shouting.
BILL
You're right.
LINDA
I want honesty.
BILL
Then this is your story too.
LINDA
It always was.
A pause.
LINDA (CONT'D)
You've grown.
BILL
I'm trying.
LINDA
Keep going.
LINDA (CONT'D)
Even the system's learning. They
laugh— tired, but still in
[Link].
OPTIONAL SCENE
LINDA
Well? You made that?
BILL
I directed.
28.
LINDA
It looks professional.
BILL
And?
LINDA
It's fantastic!Let's celebrate.
I'm getting more [Link] want
some?
BILL
Absolutely.
OPTIONAL SCENE
The two of them drive across the city to pick up a prop for a
music video. Anita found it on Facebook Marketplace.
CUT TO:
SCENE 7
BILL (O.S.)
Hey— wait!
She turns.
LINDA
Wait... let me see.
BILL
You dropped this. Thought it
might be important.
LINDA
(taking it)
Yeah. It is.
BILL
Maybe you can help me out... I'm
a bit lost.I'm looking for Jane's
[Link] it nearby?
LINDA
You're [Link] down past the
bridge.
BILL
[Link] bridge?
She hesitates.
LINDA
Come on.I'll walk you there.
BILL
You sure?
LINDA
Not at all.
CUT TO:
SCENE 4
BILL
Today is [Link] plans for
later?
LINDA
Going to the [Link] friends.
BILL
[Link] one?
LINDA
Avengers.I love it.
30.
BILL
Didn't know it was back in
[Link] a favorite movie?
LINDA
(grinning)
I'm not saying.
BILL
Come on.I won't judge.
LINDA
Dear John.
BILL
Seriously?
LINDA
[Link] judging.
BILL
I actually like it too.
BILL
Someone important?
LINDA
Not anymore.
LINDA (CONT'D)
Shoot.I've got to run.I'm late
for something.
