1 INTRODUCTION
The world today is more connected than it has ever been before. A product made in one country can be
used in another, a movie made in Hollywood can be watched in an Assamese village, and a decision
taken in one country's economy can affect markets across the globe. This growing interconnection and
interdependence of countries, economies, and cultures is known as Globalization or Golokiyokoron
( গালকীয়কৰণ).
Globalization is not a sudden event but a continuous process that has been shaped by advances in
transportation, communication, and technology over the last few decades. It has transformed the way
people trade, communicate, travel, and even think, bringing the entire world closer like a single "global
village."
Did You Know? The term "Global Village" was popularized by Canadian philosopher Marshall
McLuhan to describe how electronic media shrinks the world into a single interconnected community.
In this project, we shall study the meaning, causes, and effects — both positive and negative — of
globalization, along with its specific impact on India and our home state, Assam.

2 MEANING OF GLOBALIZATION
Globalization refers to the process by which businesses, cultures, and economies of different countries
become integrated and interconnected through international trade, investment, technology, and the free
flow of information, goods, services, and people across borders.

5 IMPACT ON INDIA AND ASSAM
Impact on India
India embraced globalization formally through the LPG Reforms (Liberalization, Privatization,
Globalization) of 1991. Since then:
• India became a global hub for Information Technology and software services
• Foreign companies like Samsung, Toyota, and Amazon set up operations in India
• Indian products such as textiles, spices, and handicrafts found international markets
• Rural-urban and rich-poor divides increased in certain sectors
Impact on Assam
Globalization has had a mixed impact on Assam, given its unique economy and culture:
Sector Impact
Tea Industry Assam tea gained international recognition and export markets, but small tea
growers face price competition from global brands.
Oil & Natural Gas Foreign collaboration and investment increased in extraction and refining,
along with modern technology adoption.
Handicrafts & Handloom Products like Muga silk and bamboo/cane craft have found global buyers
through e-commerce and GI tag recognition.
Culture & Youth Increasing influence of Western music, fashion, and food habits among the
youth, creating challenges for preserving traditions like Bihu.
Employment Migration of educated youth to other states/countries for better job
opportunities.
Note: While globalization has opened new markets for Assamese products, it also poses the challenge
of protecting the state's rich linguistic and cultural identity in the face of growing external influence.

7 CONCLUSION
Globalization is a powerful force that has reshaped the world's economy, culture, and society. It
has brought nations closer through trade, technology, and shared ideas, opening doors to growth
and opportunity that were unimaginable a few decades ago.
However, alongside its many benefits, globalization has also given rise to serious challenges
such as growing inequality, environmental degradation, and the erosion of local cultures and
traditions — challenges that regions like Assam must navigate carefully to protect their unique
identity.
The way forward lies in balanced globalization — one that embraces the benefits of global
integration while safeguarding local industries, environment, and cultural heritage, ensuring that
development is inclusive and sustainable for all.
