Two Inbreeding Problems Solution

Leia estimates her inbreeding coefficient (FLeia) to be 1/64 based on one inbreeding loop with 6 members. Princess M has two inbreeding loops, resulting in an inbreeding coefficient (FM) of 1/64 as well, calculated from two loops each with 7 members. The calculations utilize the formula F = (1/2)^n for determining inbreeding coefficients.

Leia (shown with L) finds out that her parents were

related. As she is a geneticist, she immediately wants

to estimate the inbreeding coefficient for herself. If
this is Leia’s family pedigree, what would she find
as FLeia? Show all your estimations step by step.

SOLUTION

Leia has one common ancestors, B. Therefore, there is

one inbreeding loop, which contains BEIKFJ, 6
members. Therefore, using the formula
F = (1/2)n
where n = 6,

FL = (1/2)6 = 1/64

The family relations in a royal family is given in the
figure. Estimate the inbreeding coefficient of Princess
M Show all your estimations step by step.

SOLUTION

M has two common ancestors, A and B. Therefore, we

have two inbreeding loops, loop A (ADHKEIL) and loop
B (BDHKEIL). Each loops have 7 members.

Then,

FM = Floop A + Floop B
Floop A = (1/2)7 = 1/128
Floop B = (1/2)7 = 1/128
FM = 1/128 + 1/128 = 2/128 = 1/64
