Introduction
Matrices are rectangular array with entries from a field like R or C or a ring. The array consist of
a number of rows of equal lengths and columns of equal length. There are rules of addition and
multiplications and certain collection of matrices form important classes of algebraic structures
like groups, rings and fields.
Matrices appear as representaions of vectors and linear transformations between vector spaces.
The study of the properties of matrices essentially captures the properties of the Vector spaces and
the linear transformations. As the matrix representaions of Vector spaces is not unique, the several
representations must be connected by what we call as Similarity transformations. We will study
some of the common and essential aspects of the various matrix representations. The spirit is to
capture these essential aspects through the properties of matrices rather than the underlying vector
spaces. We will start with a brief review of Vector space.
