When one or more phase wires in an electrical

become short-circuited, and the system reaches an
abnormal state, an electrical fault occurs.

L-L-L fault is also known as 3-φ fault.
A line to line fault or unsymmetrical fault occurs
when two conductors are short circuited. L-L-L faults are balanced i.e. the system remains

The 3-φ fault occurs rarely but it is the most severe

This large current is used for determining the rating

Note-
Rod gap has the advantage of low cost and easy adjustment on site.
In rod gap arrester in current limiting resistance is connected series with the
load in order to avoid continuous sparking even at low voltage.
The rod gap depends upon the operating voltage of the system.
To protect the insulator from the arc the distance between the rod gap and the
insulator should be more than one-third of the rod gap length.
Horn Gap arrester The steepness of the wave incident on the equipment to be protected is reduced
UPPCL AE-29.08.2021 It reflects the voltage surge back on to the horn
Drawbacks- The time of operation of the gap is quite large as compared to the
modern protective gear.
Note
Horn gap is provide protection against high voltage surge due to lightning and

An arc gap found by two horn-shaped electrodes that diverges so that arc
extinguishes itself.
It is connected in shunt between each conductor and earth.
The gap between the horns is less at the bottom and large at the top.
Expulsion gap or protective It is also known as expulsion type of lightning arrester.
tube arrester The breakdown voltage of expulsion tubes is slightly lower than for plain rod
gaps for the same spacing.
Note
Expulsion type arrester is also called "Protector Tube."
It consists of a tube made of fiber which is very effective.
It is commonly used in a system operating at a voltage up to 33KV.

Note
Thyrite arrester is most common and is mostly used for the protection
against high dangerous voltages.
Thyrite device is used as lightning arrester.
Thyrite has non-linear characteristics.
In sub-stations, the most commonly used type of arrester is thyrite lightning
arrester.
In thyrite lightning arrester, on doubling the voltage the current increases to
12.6 time.
It consists of discs of 15 cm diameter and 19 mm thickness.
These discs are assembled inside the glazed porcelain container.
It is mostly used for the protection against high dangerous voltage and offers
a low resistance path to the surge.

Metal Oxide Lightning ● Metal oxide lightning arrester is simple in construction and has superior
arrester energy absorption capability, better surge protection, more stable protective
characteristics and provides substantial reduction in over voltage across the
equipment as compared to thyrite arrester.
Note
A metal oxide varistor protect against high voltage.
Oxide film arrester-
It operates on the fact that certain dry chemicals have the property to change
rapidly from a good conductor to almost perfect insulator when slightly
heated.
Example- Lead peroxide, which has a specific resistance of 25 ohms per
mm cube at normal temperature, becomes red lead at about 150ºC and has a
specific resistance of the order of 600MΩ/mm3.
The great advantage of oxide film arrester is that it does not require daily
charging.
It may thus be installed at points on transmission systems where daily
attendance is difficult or expensive to provide.
Note
The impulse ratio of oxide film arrester is more than unity.
In oxide film arrester when heated, lead peroxide gets converted to red lead.
