GRADE 9 MATHEMATICS

TERM 1 PERFORMANCE TASK

"Starting a Small Business: Understanding Linear Functions"

Learning Competencies
Students are expected to:
 represent linear functions using tables, graphs, and equations;
 determine the slope and y-intercept of a linear function;
 interpret the meaning of slope and intercept in real-life situations; and
 solve practical problems involving linear functions.

Performance Task
Situation
You and your classmates plan to start a homemade milk tea (or lemonade) business during the
school fair. You need to determine how much money your business will earn depending on the
number of cups sold.
Use a linear function to model your income.

Directions
Working in groups of 3–4 students, complete the following tasks.

Part A. Create a Situation

Choose a simple business such as:
 Milk Tea
 Lemonade
 Cookies
 Sandwiches
 Fruit Shake
Assume:
 Selling price per item = ₱50
 Initial cost = ₱500

Part B. Write the Linear Function

Represent the total income using the equation
y=50 x−500
where
 x = number of items sold
 y = profit (in pesos)

Part C. Complete the Table

Items Sold (x) Profit (y)

50

Part D. Graph the Function

Plot the points from the completed table on a Cartesian plane and draw the line.

Part E. Interpret
Answer the following.
1. What does the slope represent?
2. What does the y-intercept represent?
3. After selling how many items will the business break even?
4. If you sell 45 items, what is your profit?
5. Explain why this situation is represented by a linear function.

Part F. Presentation
Each group will present their work in 5–7 minutes.
Include:
 Equation
 Table
 Graph
 Computations
 Explanation of the results

Materials
 Graphing paper
 Ruler
 Calculator (optional)
 Manila paper or cartolina
 Colored markers

Teacher's Guide
Time Allotment
 Day 1: Planning and computations
 Day 2: Graphing and preparation
 Day 3: Presentation

Evidence of Learning
Students will submit:
 Completed worksheet
 Graph
 Computations
 Reflection (5–7 sentences)
 Group presentation

Sample Solution
For the function:
y=50 x−500
the graph is a straight line with a positive slope. The slope is 50, meaning each additional item
sold increases the profit by ₱50. The y-intercept is −500, representing the initial investment
before any sales are made.
This task integrates financial literacy with linear functions, allowing students to apply
mathematics in a practical, real-world context while developing analytical, collaborative, and
communication skills.
