Taking all the factors mentioned into account, there are two courses of action to improve
time management. There were many suggestions made, which included hiring a
consultant on a temporary contract or using the HR department.
Having considered the options, a reasonable approach would seem to be to use a team
from HR to carry out initial research. This would take place in three steps and would
include the following: investigating the effectiveness of our current work patterns and
conducting consultations with all staff to discover any issues which employees feel might
affect task efficiency in their role. As the third step, we will investigate ways to improve
staff engagement, for example, by providing suggestion boxes or running competitions
for the best idea to improve productivity. Some of the recent problems we have

Hello from Shanghai!

Well, here I finally am in Shanghai thanks to the company secondment programme. It
was quite a culture shock when I got off the plane, but I’m very excited to be here. I
arrived last week and was met by Chao, from the office, who spoke very good English.
He introduced me to my manager, Mr Huang. Chao then took me to the company
apartment where I’ll be staying. It’s quite small, but it has everything I need. I started
work the next morning and was shown my desk in a huge open-plan office. Mr Huang
introduced me to most of the staff during the day.
The work is very interesting and it’s giving me a better global perspective. I’m also
learning to adapt to the different work culture. At first, I thought my colleagues didn’t
like me, but I’ve discovered it’s because they are worried about their English – they
shouldn’t be as it’s really very good! The main downsides are that I don’t speak Mandarin
very well and the working hours are longer than at home.
However, I’m really looking forward to improving my Mandarin and learning all about
the local culture and history. I am sure that this experience will be beneficial to my career
progression and I highly recommend it to everyone.

than imported ones delivered by airplanes. I strongly agree with this idea because air
freight causes serious air pollution and noise pollution, both of which negatively impact
the environment and human health.

Firstly, airplanes emit large amounts of greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide and
nitrogen oxides. These emissions contribute heavily to global warming and climate
change. According to research, air freight produces far more CO₂ per kilogram of cargo
compared to other modes of transport, making it a major source of atmospheric pollution.
Additionally, these pollutants worsen air quality, leading to respiratory diseases in

systems that protect labor rights. In my opinion, two effective approaches are promoting
fair trade certification and strengthening government regulation.

The first solution is to expand the use of fair trade labels, which guarantee that food
producers receive a minimum price and work under safe conditions. When consumers
choose fair trade-certified products—such as coffee, bananas, or cocoa—they indirectly
support ethical labor practices. According to Fairtrade International, over 1.9 million
workers across 71 countries have benefited from fair trade standards, which often include
education, healthcare, and community development projects. Encouraging more retailers
and customers to prioritize these products can increase demand for ethically sourced
food.

Secondly, governments in importing countries can play a crucial role by enforcing labor
standards through trade agreements. By requiring transparency in supply chains and
setting legal requirements for minimum wages and working conditions, governments can
pressure large companies to be more responsible. For instance, the EU’s 2023 law on
corporate sustainability due diligence obliges firms to ensure their suppliers respect
human rights, including fair pay.

In conclusion, ensuring fair wages for workers in developing countries requires both
