Algebra II Mastery Series — Volume 4

Exponential Functions (Deep Learning Edition)

This chapter explains exponential functions slowly and clearly. You will learn what exponential
growth and decay mean, how to solve exponential equations, and how these models are used in
real life like population growth and radioactive decay.

Part 1 — What an Exponential Function Is

An exponential function is a function where the variable is in the exponent. Example: f(x) = 2^x. In
this function, x is the exponent, not the base. This is different from a polynomial like x^2.
Exponential functions grow very quickly when the base is greater than 1.

Part 2 — General Form

The general form of an exponential function is f(x) = a·b^x. The number a is the starting value. The
number b is the growth or decay factor. If b > 1 the function shows growth. If 0 < b < 1 the function
shows decay.

Part 3 — Exponential Growth

Example: f(x)=3·2^x. Each time x increases by 1, the function doubles. This models things like
populations or bacteria growth.

Part 4 — Exponential Decay

Example: f(x)=5·(1/2)^x. The value gets smaller every step. This models radioactive decay or
cooling processes.

Part 5 — Horizontal Asymptotes

Most exponential functions approach but never touch the line y = 0. This means y = 0 is a
horizontal asymptote.

Part 6 — Solving Exponential Equations

Example: 2^x = 16. We rewrite 16 as 2^4. So 2^x = 2^4 and therefore x = 4.

Worked Examples
Example 1
Problem: Evaluate 2^4
Solution: 2^4 = 16

Example 2
Problem: Evaluate 3^3
Solution: 3^3 = 27

Example 3
Problem: Solve 2^x = 8
Solution: 8 = 2^3 so x = 3

Example 4
Problem: Solve 5^x = 25
Solution: 25 = 5^2 so x = 2

Example 5
Problem: Evaluate 10·2^3
Solution: 2^3 = 8 so answer = 80

Example 6
Problem: Evaluate 4·3^2
Solution: 3^2 = 9 so answer = 36

Example 7
Problem: Solve 3^x = 81
Solution: 81 = 3^4 so x = 4

Example 8
Problem: Solve 2^x = 32
Solution: 32 = 2^5 so x = 5

Example 9
Problem: Evaluate 6·(1/2)^2
Solution: (1/2)^2 = 1/4 so answer = 1.5

Example 10
Problem: Solve 10^x = 100
Solution: 100 = 10^2 so x = 2
