b8 Science Scheme

The document covers various topics related to biology and energy, including definitions of dentition, differences between deciduous and permanent teeth, features of outer planets, and methods to prevent tooth decay. It also outlines the life cycle of a mosquito, contrasts biological and chemical control, and discusses the Law of Conservation of Energy along with energy conversions. Additionally, it differentiates between food chains and food webs, and explains the carbon cycle processes of photosynthesis and respiration.

QUESTION 1 (20 MARKS)

(a) Define Dentition. (4 marks)

Answer:
Dentition is the arrangement, number and types of teeth in the mouth of a human or animal.

b) Explain the difference between Deciduous Teeth and Permanent Teeth, stating the total
number in each set. (6 marks)
Deciduous (Milk) Teeth
First set of teeth.
Temporary.
20 teeth.
Permanent Teeth
Second set of teeth.
Last throughout adult life.
32 teeth.

(c) State two common features shared by all the four outer planets. (4 marks)
They are very large planets (gas giants/ice giants).
They all have rings and many natural satellites (moons).
(Any two correct points.)

(d) State two ways to prevent or manage tooth and gum decay. (6 marks)
Brush teeth twice daily with fluoride toothpaste.
Reduce sugary foods and visit the dentist regularly.

QUESTION 3 (20 MARKS)

(a) Outline the four developmental stages in the life cycle of a mosquito. (8 marks)
Egg
Larva (Wriggler)
Pupa (Tumbler)
Adult mosquito

(b) Explain the difference between Biological Control and Chemical Control. (6 marks)
Biological Control
Uses living organisms (such as fish that eat mosquito larvae) to reduce mosquitoes.
Chemical Control
Uses chemicals or insecticides to kill mosquitoes and their larvae.

(c) State two negative effects of Anopheles mosquitoes on human life. (6 marks)
They transmit malaria.
Their bites cause itching and irritation.
QUESTION 4 (20 MARKS)
(a) State the Law of Conservation of Energy. (4 marks)
Energy cannot be created or destroyed but can only be changed from one form to another.

(b) Describe the energy conversion that occurs when: (6 marks)

(i) A church bell rings. (3 marks)
Mechanical energy → Sound energy.
(ii) An electric bulb is switched on. (3 marks)
Electrical energy → Light energy + Heat energy.

(c) Name and explain the three main stages involved in getting electricity from power stations to
our homes in Ghana. (10 marks)
Generation – Electricity is produced at the power station.
Transmission – Electricity is carried over long distances through high-voltage transmission lines.
Distribution – Electricity is supplied through transformers and distribution lines to homes, schools
and businesses.

QUESTION 5 (20 MARKS)

(a) Differentiate between a Food Chain and a Food Web. (6 marks)
Food Chain
A single pathway showing how energy flows from one organism to another.
Food Web
A network of interconnected food chains showing many feeding relationships.

(b) From Food Web B write down: (6 marks)

i. One producer: Grass
ii. One primary consumer: Grasshopper (Rabbit or Mouse also accepted.)
iii. One prey of the Hawk: Snake (Lizard also accepted.)

(c) Explain the carbon cycle processes of Photosynthesis and Respiration. (8 marks)
Photosynthesis
Green plants absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and use sunlight to make food, storing
carbon in plant tissues while releasing oxygen.
Respiration
Plants and animals break down food to release energy, giving off carbon dioxide back into the
atmosphere.
Overall:
Carbon moves from the atmosphere to plants during photosynthesis, then to animals through
feeding, and finally back to the atmosphere through respiration.
