COMPUTING PROJECT MANAGEMENT
LECTURE 1: INTRODUCTION TO COMPUTING PROJECT
MANAGEMENT
Introduction
Computing Project Management is a critical area of study for students pursuing a
Bachelor of Information Technology. Most activities in the IT field are carried out
in the form of projects, such as developing software systems, implementing
networks, deploying information systems, or designing digital platforms.
Understanding how such projects are planned, managed, and completed
successfully is essential for both academic and professional growth.
This lecture introduces the fundamental concepts of projects and computing project
management, explains why IT projects are unique, and highlights the role of
project management in ensuring project success.
Meaning of a Project
A project is a temporary endeavor undertaken to create a unique product, service,
or system.
Key Characteristics of a Project
A project:
• Has a specific start and end date
• Has clearly defined objectives
• Uses limited resources such as time, money, and people
• Produces a unique outcome
• Involves uncertainty and risk
What Is NOT a Project
The following activities are not projects because they are continuous:
• Daily system maintenance
• Routine data entry operations
• Regular teaching every semester
Example
Developing an online student registration system within six months using a fixed
budget is a project. Maintaining the system after deployment is not a project but an
operational activity.
Meaning of Computing / IT Project Management
Computing Project Management refers to the application of knowledge, skills,
tools, and techniques to plan, execute, monitor, and complete computing-related
projects effectively.
It ensures that IT projects:
• Are completed on time
• Stay within budget
• Meet user and organizational requirements
• Deliver quality systems
Examples of Computing Projects
• Development of a mobile application
• Design of an e-commerce website
• Implementation of a hospital information system
• Installation of a computer network
• Development of a cybersecurity solution
Unique Nature of Computing Projects
Computing projects differ significantly from projects in other fields such as
construction or manufacturing.
Characteristics of Computing Projects
• The product is largely intangible (software or digital systems)
• Requirements often change during development
• Technology evolves rapidly
• Errors may not be visible immediately
• User involvement is critical
Comparison Example
Unlike a building, where errors can be physically seen, errors in a software system
may only appear when the system is used by end users.
Why Computing Projects Often Fail
Despite advances in technology, many IT projects fail or do not meet expectations.
Common Causes of Failure
• Poor requirement definition
• Inadequate planning
• Poor communication among stakeholders
• Scope creep (uncontrolled changes to project scope)
• Lack of user involvement
• Unrealistic schedules and budgets
• Weak project leadership
Example
A system may be delivered on time but fail because it does not meet user needs or
is difficult to use.
Role of a Project Manager in Computing Projects
A Project Manager is responsible for ensuring that a computing project is
successfully completed.
Key Responsibilities
• Defining project goals and objectives
• Planning tasks, schedules, and resources
• Coordinating project team members
• Managing project risks
• Communicating with stakeholders
• Monitoring project progress
• Ensuring quality standards are met
The project manager does not need to be the best programmer but must have strong
leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
Project Success and Project Failure
Completing a project does not automatically mean it is successful.
Project Success
A computing project is considered successful if:
• User requirements are met
• Stakeholders are satisfied
• The system is reliable and usable
• Project objectives are achieved
Project Failure
A project may be considered a failure if:
• It exceeds the budget significantly
• It is delivered too late
• It does not meet user needs
• It is rejected by users
Importance of Computing Project Management
Studying computing project management helps students to:
• Manage academic and final year projects effectively
• Work efficiently in team-based environments
• Understand real-world IT project challenges
• Develop leadership and decision-making skills
• Prepare for careers in IT and management roles
