Rates
OBJECTIVES
• Solve problems involving
rates (e.g. speed)
1. What is a rate? Recap
A rate is a ratio that compares two different quantities measured
in different units. It shows how much of one quantity exists or is
produced for a certain amount of the other quantity. Rates are
often expressed as a quantity per unit.

2. Identify whether each example is a rate or a unit rate.

Php150 per 3 kilograms 30 kilometers per hour
Php150 30 km
3 kg 1 hr
rate unit rate
Recap
3. How do you convert a rate into a unit rate?
Divide both the numerator and the denominator by the denominator value:

Php150 per 3 kilograms Php50 per kilogram

Php150 150 150÷3 50
= = =
3 kg 3 3÷3 1
rate unit rate

or simply:
Divide the numerator by the denominator:

Php150
= Php50/kg
3 kg

PROBLEM SOLVING
Example 1. A bakery can bake 200 loaves of
bread in 8 hours. How many loaves can they
bake per hour?

Solution:
200 loaves
Loaves per hour = = 25 loaves per hour
3 hours
PROBLEM SOLVING
Example 2. The population of Cebu City in
2023 is estimated to be 1.1 million, covering a
city area of 315 sq km. What is its population
per square kilometer?

Solution:
Find the population density (population per square kilometer):

Population per 1,100,000 people ≈ 3,492.06

=
square kilometer 315 sq km
≈ 3,492 people/sq km
PROBLEM SOLVING
Example 3. A rental service charges
Php240 for an 8-hour bicycle rental. How
much should a customer pay if they rent a
bicycle for 10 hours?
Solution:
Find the unit rate (cost per hour): Calculate the cost for 10 hours:

Cost per Php240 Cost per =10 × Php30

=
hour 8 hours hour
= Php30 per hour = Php300
PROBLEM SOLVING
Example 4. A smartphone costs Php12,000.
How much do 3 smartphones cost?

Solution:
Total cost = 3 × Php12,000

= Php36,000
PROBLEM SOLVING
Example 5. A train travels 360 kilometers
in 6 hours. Calculate its speed in kilometers
per minute. How long will it take to cover
420 kilometers?
Solution: Find the speed in kilometers per hour:
Find the speed in Speed in 60 km/h
kilometers per hour:
= = 1 km/min
km/min 60 minutes
360 km
Speed = Calculate the time to travel 420 kilometers:
6 hours 420 km
Time = = 7 hours
= 60 km/h 60 km/h
PROBLEM SOLVING
Example 6. A group of hikers covered
420 km in 70 hours. Calculate their
speed (in simplest fraction form). How
far can they hike in 1 day?
Solution:
Calculate speed in kilometers Calculate distance covered in
per hour(in simplest form): 1 day (24 hours):
420 km
Speed = Distance in 1 day = 6 km/h×24 hours
70 hours
= 6 km/h = 144 km
Activity Solve the following problems.
1. The population of Davao City in 2023 is estimated to be 1.8 million,
covering a city area of 2,444 sq km. What is its population per square
kilometer?
2. Maria can bake 75 cakes in 15 days. How many cakes can she bake in a
day? What is her rate per day?
3. A delivery person can deliver 45 packages in 3 hours. How many
packages can they deliver in 7 hours?
4. A box of chocolates costs Php500. How much will 4 boxes cost?
5. A cyclist rode 480 km non-stop in 60 hours. Calculate their speed (in
simplest fraction form). How far can they ride in 1 day?
