CHAPTER ONE:

Communication as a means of sharing ideas
Is derived from a Greek word called “communis” sharing or making
something common.
It is sharing of ideas stored in short memory(Information) and long
term memory(Intelligence or knowledge)
Communication as a common thing for all living things
Is used by a man (analytically) and animals (instinctively)

Communication as a Continuous Process
levels of consciousness during communication:
1. Consciousness (full feeling and knowledge of what we do)
2. Sub-consciousness (partial feeling and knowledge of what we do)
3. Unconsciousness (no feeling and knowledge of what we do)
The amount of possible media ( non verbal communication)
Communication can’t start at one time & end at other time. It is beyond our control.

Communication in verbal and non verbal
Verbal communication( speaking and writing)
Non verbal communication(physical gestures, traffic lights, road signs,
railway signals )
Communication and frame of reference
Both parties must have a common understanding (sender and receiver)
Communication as the Only Means of Satisfying Needs

Communication is a continuous process
through which ideas are shared
between/among two or more parties with
common frame of reference in order to satisfy
both physiological and psychological needs.

General communication concerns with many roles at large
Business communication concerns with business activities(Internal or External)
Internal Communication can be:-
• Maintaining and improving the morale of employees
• Giving orders to workers
• Prescribing methods and procedures
• Announcing policies and organizational changes
• Keeping the management informed

External Communication can be:-
• Selling and obtaining goods and services
• Reporting to the government and the shareholders on the
financial condition and business operations.
• Creating a favorable Climate for conducting business.
• Hiring employees
• Dealing with customers
• Negotiating with suppliers and financers
• Informing investors
• Interacting with government

Importance of Communication for an individual in
organization
Helps in getting a desired job.
Help in maintaining social relationships.
Helps in getting on the job promotion.

organization:-helps in running the major jobs
to promote interpersonal unity (Interpersonal role);
to collect and convey information (Informational role); and
to make decisions (Decisional role);

It links the organization's units horizontally, vertically.
It links the organization with the external environment.
