Laboratory Apparatus

What is the usage

of each piece of
equipment?

3
Science Skills

Test Tube

Test Tube also known as a culture tube or sample

tube, is a common piece of laboratory glassware
consisting of a finger-like length of glass or clear
plastic tubing, open at the top, usually with a
rounded U-shaped bottom. Hold a small experiment,
which would be used to conduct an investigation.

4
Science Skills

Boil Tube

Boiling tube is a large tube made of glass, which is

used in the laboratory to strongly heat substances. A
boiling tube is a scaled-up test tube, but larger in
size. This larger size allows substances to boil freely
inside a boiling tube.
Boiling tubes can also be used as a replacement for
test tubes especially when a larger volume is desired.

5
Science Skills

Test Tube Holder

Test Tube Holder obviously is designed to hold test

tubes. However, it can be used to hold pipettes and
stirring rods as well.

6
Science Skills

Graduated Cylinder

Graduated Cylinder is a piece of laboratory

equipment used to accurately measure the volume of
a liquid. Water displacement can be used to find out
the volume of a solid. Graduated cylinders are
generally more accurate and precise for this purpose
than flasks and beakers.

7
Science Skills

Beaker

Beaker is a simple container for stirring, mixing and

heating liquids commonly used in many laboratories.
Beakers are generally cylindrical in shape, with a flat
bottom and a lip for pouring.

8
Science Skills

Florence Flask

Florence Flask has a round body with a single long

neck and either a round or a flat bottom. It can be
used as a container to hold solutions of chemicals. It
is designed for uniform heating and ease of swirling;
it is produced in a number of different glass
thicknesses to stand different types of use.

9
Science Skills

Conical Flask/ Erlenmeyer Flask

Conical Flask/ Erlenmeyer Flask is a widely used

type of laboratory flask that features a flat bottom, a
conical body, and a cylindrical neck. Erlenmeyer
flasks are suitable for heating liquids. The small neck
reduces evaporative losses compared to a beaker,
while the flat bottom of the conical flask makes it
unlikely to tip over and spill.

10
Science Skills

Funnel

A funnel is a pipe with a wide, often conical mouth

and a narrow steam. It is used to channel liquid or
fine-grained substances into containers with a small
opening. Without a funnel, spillage would occur.

11
Science Skills

Burette

Burette is a vertical cylindrical piece of laboratory

glassware with a volumetric graduation on its full
length and a precision tap. It is used to dispense
known amount of a liquid reagent in experiments.

12
Science Skills

Retort Stand

Retort Stand is a ring stand or supports stand, a piece

of scientific equipment intended to support other
pieces of equipment and glassware, mostly it being
used in chemistry experiments.

13
Science Skills

Dropper Pipette

Dropper Pipette is a laboratory tool used to transport

a measured volume of liquid. It is also used to extract
or deliver small amounts of liquid.

14
Science Skills

Laboratory Thermometer

Laboratory Thermometer is a device that measures

temperature or temperature gradient using a variety
of different principles. A laboratory thermometer,
which is colloquially known as the lab thermometer,
is used for measuring temperatures other than the
human body temperature. It ranges from -10˚C to
110˚C.

15
Science Skills

Glass Rod/ Stirring Rod

Glass Rod/ Stirring Rod is a piece of laboratory

equipment used to mix chemicals and liquids for
laboratory purposes. They are usually made of solid
glass, about the thickness and slightly longer than a
drinking straw.

16
Science Skills

Spatula

Spatula is used to take and handle small quantities of

solid chemicals. It is used like a spoon or and
instrument for scooping material out of a container.

17
Science Skills

Tripod

Tripod is a three-legged piece of equipment,

generally used as a platform of some sort. This lab
equipment is used to support and hold various flasks,
beakers, and other an also during experiments.

18
Science Skills

Wire Gauze

Wire Gauge used in an experiment is placed under

the container holding the liquid, that is being heated
by the Bunsen burner so that the container does not
have direct contact with the flame.

19
Science Skills

Bunsen Burner

Bunsen Burner device for combining a flammable gas

with controlled amounts of air before ignition; it
produces a hotter flame than would be possible using
the ambient air and gas alone.

20
Science Skills

Forceps

Forceps are used when fingers are too large to grasp

small objects or when many objects need to be held
at one time while the hands are used to perform a
task.

21
Science Skills

Mortar and Pestle

Mortar and Pestle is a tool used to crush, grind, and

mix solid substances. The substance to be ground is
placed in the mortar and ground, crushed or mixed
with the pestle.

22
Science Skills

Microscope

Microscope is an instrument used to see objects that

are too small for the naked eye. There are many types
of microscopes, the most common and first to be
invented is the optical microscope which uses light to
image the sample.

23
Science Skills

Top Pan Balance

A Top Pan Balance is used mainly for rough

weighing for the preparation of reagents
and stock solutions where slight weight
variations do not have a significant
influence on the result of the analysis.

24
Science Skills

Force meter

Force Meter is an instrument used to measure the

size of a force. Most force meters have a hook that
you can use to hang or pull on somethings. This will
cause a spring to move and show you how force is
being applied.

25
Science Skills

Accuracy vs Precision

Accuracy refers to how close a measurement is to

the true or accepted value.
Precision refers to how close measurements of the
same item are to each other.
