Sample Problems

The document contains a series of engineering problems related to fluid mechanics and thermodynamics. It includes calculations for viscosity, force required to drag a plate in glycerine, gas constant and density, bulk modulus of elasticity, capillary rise in different liquids, hydraulic press weight, pressure measurement using a manometer, and pressure difference between two tanks. Each problem provides specific parameters and conditions for solving the respective equations.

1. Determine the viscosity of a liquid having kinematic viscosity 6 stokes and specific gravity of 1.90.

2. Two large plane surfaces are 2.4cm apart. The space between the surfaces is filled with glycerine. What force is
required to drag a very thin plate of surface area 0.5 square meter between the two large plane surfaces at a speed
of 0.6m/s, if the thin plate is in the middle of the two plane surfaces.

3. A gas weighs 16𝑁/𝑚3 at 25℃ and at an absolute pressure of 0.25𝑁/𝑚𝑚2. Determine the gas constant and density
of the gas.

4. What is the bulk modulus of elasticity of a liquid which is compressed in a cylinder from a volume of 0.0125𝑚3 at
80𝑁/𝑐𝑚2 pressure to a volume of 0.0124𝑚3 at 150𝑁/𝑐𝑚2 pressure?

5. Calculate the capillary rise in a glass tube of 2.50mm diameter when immersed vertically in (a) water and (b)
mercury. Take surface tensions 𝜎 = 0.0725 𝑁/𝑚 for water and 𝜎 = 0.52 𝑁/𝑚 for mercury in contact with air. The
specific gravity for mercury is given as 13.6 and angle of contact = 130°. For water angle of contact is 0°.

6. A hydraulic press has a ram of 30cm diameter and a plunger of 4.50cm diameter. Find the weight (N) lifted by the
hydraulic press when the force applied at the plunger is 500N.
7. manometer is attached to a pie measure pressure as shown. Calculate the pressure at point A.

8. Find the difference in pressure between tanks A and B as shown. If 𝑑1 = 330𝑚𝑚, 𝑑2 = 160𝑚𝑚, 𝑑3 = 480𝑚𝑚 and
𝑑4 = 230𝑚𝑚.
