A Journey Toward Healing
At the age of seven, I received heartbreaking news that would shape my aspirations: my aunt
had lost her battle with cancer. Around that time, I watched a medical drama featuring an oncologist
who treated patients with various forms of cancer. These experiences sparked my interest in
medicine. What began as small acts, such as treating minor cuts for family members, gradually
developed into a genuine passion. In Form 1, I discovered a YouTube channel introducing different
medical specialties, where I found the field that resonated most with me: Radiation Oncology.
Motivated by this early calling, I approached my secondary education with discipline and
determination, thereby consistently ranking in the top ten of my class and maintaining an annual
average of approximately 16. Upon transitioning to high school, I intensified my efforts and ranked in
the top two during my first term, later securing first place in my class with an annual average of 17.
Through disciplined study, I developed strong time management skills, effective study techniques,
and resilience; qualities deemed essential for a career in medicine. My commitment to excellence
extended beyond academic performance into leadership and service within my school community.
As a result of my academic diligence, I was nominated for the Zachariah Tanee Fonum
Awards during both of my high school years. Although I did not receive the award, the experience
allowed me to engage with accomplished individuals and broaden my perspective.
Serving as a student leader since 2022 has strengthened my leadership, public speaking, and
decision-making skills. One challenging moment involved resolving disagreements between arts and
science students over our graduation theme. Faced with time constraints and conflicting opinions, I
guided the group toward a practical resolution, learning that effective leadership requires
decisiveness and prioritizing the collective good.
Additionally, I served as a lab assistant during practical lessons, where I developed teamwork
and problem-solving skills. When a shortage of boiling tubes caused disputes among groups, my
fellow assistants and I organized shared access to ensure fairness and efficiency. This experience
reinforced my ability to remain composed and resourceful under pressure. These experiences, both
academic and extracurricular, strengthened not only my technical skills but also my understanding of
responsibility, collaboration, and patient-centered thinking; qualities central to the field I aspire to
pursue.
A specialty such as radiation oncology represents the intersection of advanced medical
technology and compassionate patient care. In Cameroon, access to modern oncological equipment
and comprehensive psychosocial support for patients remains limited, reinforcing my determination
to contribute meaningfully to healthcare development in my home country. South Korea’s rapid
advancement in medical technology, particularly in precision-based treatment methods and hospital-
centered research innovation, reflects the standard of excellence I aspire to learn from.
Seoul National University stands at the forefront of medical research and clinical training in
Korea, distinguished by its rigorous academic curriculum and integration of research with practice.
The university’s emphasis on scientific inquiry and global collaboration aligns with my ambition to
become not only a skilled clinician but also a contributor to medical advancement. Studying at SNU
would allow me to train in an environment that values both technological excellence and human-
centered care; qualities essential to radiation oncology and to the future I envision for healthcare in
Cameroon.
