CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

In the rapidly evolving educational landscape, there is an increasing recognition of the need to
shift away from traditional, teacher-centered instructional methods toward more interactive and
learner-centered approaches. Research has consistently shown that traditional lectures, which
often consist of excessive teacher talk, can lead to student disengagement and hinder the
development of critical thinking skills (Hattie, 2012; Biggs & Tang, 2011). This study
specifically investigated the effectiveness of the Think-Pair-Share strategy as a means to reduce
teacher talk and foster a more learner-centered instructional environment among Basic 6 learners
at SDA Basic School, Assin Foso. By utilizing collaborative learning techniques, the research
aimed to enhance student participation, facilitate deeper understanding of content, and promote a
culture of active engagement in the classroom.

Overview

Chapter One serves as a foundational introduction to the study, presenting the context, rationale,
and significance of exploring the Think-Pair-Share strategy in the Ghanaian educational system.
This chapter comprises several key sections: it provides the background to the study, illustrates
the statement of the problem, clarifies the purpose of the research, and outlines the specific
research questions addressed. Furthermore, the significance of the study is elaborated upon, and
the delimitations and limitations encountered during the research are discussed. Finally, the
organization of the study is described, offering a clear roadmap for the remaining chapters.

Background to the Study

The shift in educational paradigms from traditional to progressive teaching methods reflects a
growing understanding of how students learn best. Traditional lecture-based approaches often
result in passive learners who are less likely to engage critically with the material presented
(World Bank, 2018). The emphasis on rote memorization and teacher-directed classrooms can
limit students' abilities to think creatively and collaboratively. For instance, research conducted
by Osei and Agyeman (2017) highlighted that many Ghanaian classrooms remain overly reliant
on teacher talk, often leaving little room for student participation and interaction.

The Think-Pair-Share strategy has emerged as an effective pedagogical tool to counteract these
challenges. This collaborative learning technique encourages students to first think about a
question or prompt individually, then pair up with a partner to discuss their thoughts, and finally
share their insights with the class. This method not only promotes peer-to-peer interaction but
also allows students to articulate their understanding and learn from one another (Lyman, 1981).
Studies have shown that when implemented effectively, Think-Pair-Share increases student
engagement and enhances understanding of concepts, as learners have the opportunity to reflect
and refine their thoughts through discussion (Gardener, 2016).

At SDA Basic School, observations indicated that a significant number of students exhibited low
levels of participation during lessons due to the predominance of traditional instructional
methods. Teachers often dominated classroom discourse, leading to missed opportunities for
students to engage meaningfully with the content. The need for innovative teaching strategies
that prioritize learner participation became evident. Thus, the implementation of the Think-Pair-
Share strategy was proposed as a means to create a more inclusive and interactive classroom
culture.

By investigating the impact of Think-Pair-Share on student engagement, this study aims to

provide valuable insights into effective instructional practices that can enhance learner-centered
teaching within the Ghanaian educational context. The findings could potentially serve as a
model for broader curricular reforms aimed at promoting active learning approaches in schools
across the country.

Statement of the Problem

Despite the benefits associated with learner-centered approaches, many Basic 6 learners at SDA
Basic School exhibited challenges in active participation and engagement during lessons.
Observational data revealed that traditional teaching methods, characterized by high levels of
teacher talk and minimal student interaction, were commonplace. This lack of engagement poses
significant obstacles to effective teaching and learning, as students are often left disconnected
from the material being presented.

Furthermore, the limited use of collaborative learning practices can hinder the development of
important skills such as communication, teamwork, and critical thinking among students. As a
result, there is a pressing need to identify effective strategies, such as Think-Pair-Share, that can
reduce teacher-led discourse and foster a more interactive and supportive learning environment.

Purpose of the Study

The primary purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of the Think-Pair-Share
strategy in reducing the amount of teacher talk and increasing learner-centered instruction among
Basic 6 students at SDA Basic School. The research aimed to determine whether the
implementation of this strategy could enhance student engagement, foster more meaningful
interactions among peers, and improve overall classroom dynamics. Additionally, the study
sought to provide evidence-based recommendations for educators seeking to incorporate more
collaborative approaches in their teaching practices.

Research Questions

1. How did the implementation of the Think-Pair-Share strategy affect the amount of teacher talk
during lessons?

2. To what extent did Think-Pair-Share increase student engagement and participation in

classroom activities?

3. What were the perceptions of students regarding their learning experience after the
implementation of the Think-Pair-Share strategy?

4. How did the use of Think-Pair-Share influence the quality of student interactions and
collaborative learning outcomes?

Significance of the Study

This study holds significant implications for educational practices, as it explores the
effectiveness of collaborative teaching strategies in enhancing student engagement and
participation. The findings provide insightful evidence on the potential benefits of implementing
Think-Pair-Share in classrooms, which could inform teaching methodologies not only at SDA
Basic School but also in other educational settings across Ghana. By contributing to the
understanding of effective instructional strategies, this research aims to support educators in their
quest to foster more interactive, learner-centered environments that cater to the diverse learning
needs of students.

Moreover, this research aligns with national educational goals that seek to improve the quality of
education in Ghana through innovative teaching practices. In addition, this study contributes to
the growing body of literature on learner-centered instruction within the Ghanaian context,
offering practical recommendations for educators and policymakers alike.

Delimitation

The study was delimited to Basic 6 learners at SDA Basic School, focusing specifically on the
application of the Think-Pair-Share strategy within this particular grade level. Other grades or
schools were not included in the scope of this research, thereby allowing for a concentrated
examination of the specific dynamics and challenges present within the Basic 6 classroom.
Limitation of the Study

Several limitations impacted the study, including a relatively small sample size of participants,
which may restrict the generalizability of the findings. Furthermore, the study was conducted
within a single school context, which may not fully represent the experiences and challenges
faced by students in other educational settings. Additionally, external factors such as varying
levels of student familiarity with collaborative learning methods could have influenced the
outcomes of the research. The reliance on self-reported data from students also introduced
potential biases, as perceptions may not always accurately reflect the complexities of the learning
experience.

Organization of the Rest of the Study

The research is organized into five chapters. Chapter One presents the introduction, including the
context and significance of the study. Chapter Two provides a literature review addressing
relevant research on effective teaching strategies, collaborative learning, and learner-centered
instruction. Chapter Three details the methodology utilized for data collection and analysis,
outlining the research design, sampling methods, and data collection procedures. Chapter Four
presents the findings based on the data collected during the study, along with a discussion of the
implications of these findings. Finally, Chapter Five concludes the study with a summary of the
key findings, recommendations for educators, and suggestions for future research.
