Literature Review: Importance of a Large-Scale Sports Complex in Quetta, Balochistan
Introduction
Sports infrastructure plays a critical role in the physical, social, economic, and psychological
development of communities. Modern sports facilities provide opportunities for athletic
training, recreation, health improvement, social integration, and talent development. In
developing regions such as Balochistan, the provision of high-quality sports infrastructure is
particularly important because limited facilities often restrict youth participation and
professional athletic development. Several studies conducted in Balochistan have highlighted
the direct relationship between sports infrastructure, athlete motivation, sports participation,
and community well-being.
This review examines the findings of three key studies related to sports participation, sports
culture, and sports infrastructure in Balochistan and establishes the need for a large-scale
regional sports complex in Quetta.
Sports Infrastructure and Athlete Development
Sports infrastructure includes stadiums, training facilities, indoor sports halls, athletic tracks,
swimming pools, rehabilitation centers, and sports science facilities. According to Aslam et al.
(2023), sports infrastructure significantly influences athletes' interest, motivation, and
participation in sports activities. The study examined domestic cricket players in Balochistan and
found that inadequate sports facilities, insufficient equipment, poor transportation services, and
limited training infrastructure negatively affect athlete performance and participation.
The study surveyed 426 registered domestic cricket players from Quetta and Dera Murad Jamali.
Findings indicated that:
53% of respondents reported that existing playfields do not meet national or
international standards.
52% expressed dissatisfaction with training facilities.
41% reported inadequate utilization of available infrastructure.
29% identified transportation issues as a major barrier to participation.
These findings demonstrate that investment in sports infrastructure directly contributes to
athlete development and increased participation rates (Aslam et al., 2023).
Youth Sports Participation in Balochistan
Youth participation forms the foundation of future athletic success. Aslam et al. (2022)
investigated factors influencing sports participation among students in six districts of
Balochistan. The study included 824 students from colleges across the province.
The research concluded that sports participation positively affects:
Physical health
Mental well-being
Academic performance
Social development
Self-confidence
However, several barriers were identified:
Table 1
Factors Affecting Youth Sports Participation in Balochistan
Factor Impact on Participation
Lack of Sports Facilities High
Limited Sports Equipment High
Financial Constraints High
Family Responsibilities Moderate
Lack of Organized Programs High
Poor Access to Training High
The study further reported that:
62.1% of participants were male students.
37.9% were female students.
54.6% belonged to rural areas.
45.4% belonged to urban areas.
The findings suggest that a centralized sports complex could significantly increase sports
participation among students and youth throughout Balochistan (Aslam et al., 2022).
Sports and Cultural Identity in Balochistan
Sports also play an important role in preserving cultural identity. Banol et al. (2016) examined
the historical and cultural significance of traditional sports in Baloch society. The study
highlighted that sports have historically contributed to physical fitness, social cohesion,
community interaction, and cultural continuity.
Traditional games such as "Jee," wrestling, horse racing, and archery were identified as
important cultural practices. However, many of these sports are gradually disappearing because
of urbanization and the absence of dedicated sports facilities.
The authors argue that sports facilities should not only accommodate modern international
sports but should also preserve indigenous sporting traditions and cultural heritage.
Need for a Regional Sports Complex in Quetta
Quetta serves as the administrative, educational, and economic center of Balochistan. The city
accommodates a large concentration of schools, colleges, universities, and sports organizations.
Athletes from surrounding districts regularly travel to Quetta for competitions and training
opportunities.
A large-scale regional sports complex would address several challenges identified in previous
studies:
Athletic Benefits
Professional athlete training
Talent identification
Performance enhancement
National and international competition preparation
Educational Benefits
Student participation
Physical education support
Scholarship opportunities
Community Benefits
Public recreation
Health promotion
Social integration
Youth engagement
Economic Benefits
Job creation

Required Indoor Sports Facilities
Indoor facilities allow year-round sports participation regardless of weather conditions and
support both recreational and competitive activities.

Conclusion
The reviewed literature demonstrates a strong relationship between sports infrastructure and
sports participation in Balochistan. Existing facilities are insufficient to meet the needs of
athletes, students, and the wider community. The research highlights deficiencies in training
facilities, equipment availability, and access to quality sports environments. Consequently, the
development of a large-scale regional sports complex in Quetta would significantly improve
athlete performance, increase youth participation, enhance public health, preserve cultural
sports traditions, and support the socio-economic development of Balochistan.
