Project

The project involves a group of 5 students conducting an energy analysis of an industrial thermal processing unit, such as a kiln or furnace. It includes a group report and presentation, focusing on furnace operation, data analysis, and feasibility of energy-saving measures. The report is due by July 31, 2026, at 4 pm, with specific content requirements outlined in three chapters.

Project: Energy Analysis of an Industrial Furnace/Kiln/Oven

The project is to be carried out in groups of 5 students (self-grouping). Each group is required to select an
energy analysis case study of an industrial thermal processing unit from literature. Eg. Cement Kiln,
Ceramic Kiln, Lime Kiln, Steel Reheating Furnace, Curing Oven, Drying Oven, etc.
The project consists of two components: A group report (50 marks) and a group presentation and
individual viva (50 marks). The expected content of the report is outlined below. Throughout the following
sections, the term "furnace" is used as a generic term and should be interpreted to include other industrial
thermal processing units such as kilns and ovens, where applicable.
Chapter 1: Understanding furnace operation and measurement requirements
1. Provide an overview of the furnace’s purpose, relevant inputs and outputs, and operational details
based on literature.
2. Identify and explain key parameters that affect furnace efficiency.
3. List specific measurements that need to be taken during an energy audit of the furnace.
4. Specify types of equipment required to take these measurements.
5. Clarify the purpose of each measurement and how it contributes to the audit.
Chapter 2: Data analysis and efficiency evaluation
1. Analyze reported data to calculate furnace efficiency.
2. Quantify energy losses and illustrate the furnace energy balance using Sankey diagram.
3. Identify potential areas for improvement and propose practical measures.
4. Estimate potential energy savings from the proposed measures.
Chapter 3: Feasibility and implementation planning
1. Evaluate the technical feasibility and discuss potential environmental benefits of the proposed
measures.
2. Conduct a cost-benefit analysis of the proposed measures.
3. Offer recommendations for implementing energy-saving measures.

Report submission deadline: 31st July 2026 at 4 pm.

Presentation and viva schedule will be shared later.
