Q1- What is the effect of lowering the condenser pressure on thermal efficiency? How
the average heat transferred to the steam be increased?
Ans- The overall effect of lowering the condenser pressure is an increase in the thermal
efficiency of the cycle. The average temperature at which heat is added to the steam can be
increased without increasing the boiler pressure by superheating the steam to high
temperatures.
Q2- What is mean temperature in Rankine cycle?
Ans- In the Rankine cycle, the mean temperature at which heat is supplied is less than the
maximum temperature, so that the efficiency is less than that of a Carnot cycle working
between the same maximum and minimum temperatures. The heat absorption takes place at
constant pressure over, but only the part is isothermal.
Q3- What is mean temperature of heat addition?
Ans- Mean temperature of heat addition is the average temperature of initial and final
temperature of a heat addition or heat rejection in a process. It is widely used in steam and
gas power plants. It is used to compare the heat addition with Carnot.
Q4- Explain Mean Temperature of Heat Addition?
Ans- Mean Temperature of Heat Addition is the ratio of Difference of enthalpies to
difference of entropies.
Q5- How can we increase the efficiency of Rankine Cycle?
Ans- There are three ways to increase the efficiency of the simple ideal Rankine cycle:
1) Decreasing the condenser pressure.
2) Superheating the steam to a high temperature.
3) Increasing the boiler pressure.
Q6- In which part of the heat addition process the most of the heat addition cycle occurs?
Ans- Vaporization part
Q7- Mean temperature of heat addition can be increased by?
Ans- Increasing condensor pressure decreases turbine exit temperature which in turn
increases mean temperature of heat addition.
Q8- What is the effect of reheating on Rankine Cycle?
Ans- Due to reheating, network done increases. Heat supply increases. Thermal efficiency
increases. Due to reheating, the turbine exit dryness fraction increases so moisture decreases ‑
so blade erosion becomes minimum ‑ so life of the turbine will be increased.
Q9- What is metallurgical limit?
Ans- Metallurgical Limit’ is defined as the lowest temperature limit of usable steam fixed by
metallurgical considerations.
Q10- How can we differentiate Rankine cycle from Carnot cycle?
Ans- Heat addition process of Rankine cycle is reversible isobaric whereas heat addition
process of Carnot cycle is reversible isothermal.
Q11- Rankine efficiency of a steam power plant increase in winter why?
Ans- In winters, temperature of cooling water is low, which increases Condenser’s efficiency,
thus rankine efficiency increases.
Q12- Mean temperature of heat addition can be increased by?
Ans- Increasing condensor pressure decreases turbine exit temperature which in turn
increases mean temperature of heat addition.
Q13- What is Reheat Rankine Cycle?
Ans- The Reheat Cycle. In basic rankine cycle, after the isentropic development in turbine,
steam is specifically fed into condenser for condensation process. ... It is then left to extend in
low pressure turbine to accomplish condenser pressure.
Q14- What is the effect of reheating on Rankine Cycle?
Ans- Due to reheating, network done increases. Heat supply increases. Thermal efficiency
increases. Due to reheating, the turbine exit dryness fraction increases so moisture decreases ‑
so blade erosion becomes minimum ‑ so life of the turbine will be increased.
Q15- how increasing condensor pressure increases mean temperature of heat addition.
Ans- Increasing condensor pressure decreases turbine exit temperature which in turn
increases mean temperature of heat addition.
Q16- What is bleeding?
Ans- Steam bleeding is the term related to the turbine used in rankine cycle. In this process
few percentage of the steam is taken out of the turbine at different stages an it is used to heat
the feed water to the saturation temperature after this the feed water enters into the steam
generating unit of boiler.
