*Here’s a Porter’Hs Five Forces analysis for a pet care business:

1. Threat of New Entrants

Moderate to High: Dog and cat care barriers to entry can be low especially where
establishments such as grooming, pet-walking or pet-sitting call for little capital
investment. But starting a centre like Veterinary clinic or a boarding facility would
involve much more capital, license, and some level of specialty than a grooming
service. Highly established markets tend to develop close relations with the consumers;
either the consumers are loyal to the brands, or the brands command consumers’ trust,
which can be a formidable barrier tomey entrants, this takes time to build.

2. Bargaining Power of Suppliers

Low to Moderate: These are suppliers that deal in foods for pets, grooming
accessories, and other items that will be purchased when attending the needs of a pet.
Some suppliers are numerous but, for a certain type of food, like organic or specialty
diets for cats or dogs, the type of food is limited hence the suppliers have some
leverage. However, most pet care businesses are in a position where it is easy to change
your supplier.

3. Bargaining Power of Buyers

Moderate to High: Consumers (pets’ owners) make many decisions about the various
products and services, ranging from pet washing and kennel services to veterinary
services. Loyalty for their products is highly associated with the quality of services and
the proximity of locations of their outlets. Price sensitivity can vary: some people care
about quality and prefer to get only the highest level of service, others care about the
price and would rather get an inexpensive service which also includes veterinary
services .

4. Threat of Substitutes
Moderate: Potential substitutes could be do it yourself pet care such as grooming or
making usage of friends and families for pet-sitting. Few clients may opt to go with
eccentric services such as mobile apps that offer the services of independent sitters.
However, the threat is relatively low due to the fact that some of the services that may
be offered such as veterinary are ([4]) inelasticallysubstitutable.

5. Competitive Rivalry

High: Pet care is an extremely saturated market with many independent ventures in
addition to numerous franchise businesses (such as PetSmart and Petco).
Organizations undertake competitions based on issues such as service delivery, cost,
place, and proximity. Specific services, such as treatment at spas, training for animals,
services that are oriented to individual clients, and award programs may assist a
business to stand out in this driven competition.

The findings of this study imply that pet care business requires differentiation and
customer loyalty to survive amidst high level of competition and low barriers to entry.
