2. Properties & Terminology of Operations
Definitions
• Addition: The result or answer of an addition operation is called the Sum.
• Subtraction: The result or answer of a subtraction operation is called the Difference.
• Successor: Adding 1 to any number gives its successor.
◦ Example: Successor of 756 is 757. Successor of 499 is 500.
• Predecessor: Subtracting 1 from any number gives its predecessor.
◦ Example: Predecessor of 288 is 287. Predecessor of 2,000 is 1,999.
Operation Properties
• Order (Commutative) Property: Changing the order of addends does not change the sum.
◦ Example 1: 200 + 500 = 500 + 200
◦ Example 2: 2 + 3 = 3 + 2
• Identity Property / Substitutions: Subtracting a number from itself results in zero.
◦ Example: 72,205 - 72,205 = 0
