SOLUTION TO WEEK -1 EXERCISE

1. The ratio of dogs to cats in a pet store is 3 is to 4. What is the number of dogs in the store if there
are 20 cats?
(a) 10 (b) 15 (c) 20 (d) 25
Solution
Expressing the ratio as fraction 3: 4 = 3/4
You are given the number of cats i.e. the denominator, you have to find the numerator of the
fraction.
3 = x
4 20
Cross multiply and you get 4x = 60; x = 15.
There are 15 dogs at the pet store. Option (b)

2. There are only Darjeeling, Earl grey, English breakfast and Chamomile tea bags in a
basket. There are 3 earl grey tea bags to every chamomile and for every Darjeeling tea bag
there are two English breakfast tea bags. For every 2 chamomile tea bags there are 4 Darjeeling tea
bags. If there are total of 100 tea bags in the basket, how many English breakfast tea bags
are present?
(a) 20 (b) 30 (c) 40 (d) 50
Solution
First express the number of tea bags in ratio of each other:
1 CM: 3 EG
1 DJ: 2 EB
2 CM: 4 DJ i.e. 1 CM: 2DJ
Expressing all four of them in one ratio 1CM:2DJ:3G:4EB.
Sum of all parts of the ratio (the whole) = 1+2+3+4 = 10.
Total number of tea bags = 100.
Number of English breakfast tea bags = 4/10 * 100 = 40 tea bags Option (c)

3. Peter reads twice as much as Barry but only 1⁄2 as much as Andrew. Doug reads as much as all
three put together. How many books did Barry read last week if Doug read 7 books?
(a) 1 (b) 2 (c) 3 (d) 4
Solution
Ratio of the 4 book reads can be formed as shown below:
Barry: 2Peter: 4Andrew: 7Doug {Doug has 7 as his ratio coefficient because 1+2+4 = 7}
So the ratio of all 4 is 1:2:4:7
Ratio of Barry to Doug = 1:7. Option (a)

4. The ratio of daily wages of two workers is 4 : 3 and one gets daily Rs. 9 more than the other,
what are their daily wages in Rs ?
(a) 32 and 24 (b) 28 and 19 (c) 49 and 40 (d) 36 and 27
Solution
Let the daily wages of the two workers be x and y respectively. Given that x/y= 4/3 or 3x =4y
Given that x = y + 9 multiply this by 3
3x = 3y + 27 substitute value of 3x with 4y we have 4y = 3y + 27 i.e. y=27
X = 27+ 9 = 36 Option (d)

5. What sum of money is to be divided among 3 men in the ratio 3 : 4 : 5 so that the third man
receives Rs 10 only ?
(a) 56 (b) 84 (c) 120 (d) 24
Solution
Let x be the total amount to be disbursed. Share of Person 3 is
given 5*x /(3+4+5) = 10
hence x = 10*12/5 = 24 Option (d)

6. In an election contested by two parties, Party D secured 12% of the total votes more than Party R.
If party R got 132,000 votes, by how many votes did it lose the election?
(a) 32000 (b) 36000 (c) 40000 (d) 44000
Solution:
Let the percentage of the total votes secured by Party D be x%
Then the percentage of total votes secured by Party R = (x – 12)%
As there are only two parties contesting in the election, the sum total of the votes secured by the
two parties should total up to 100% i.e., x + x – 12 = 100
2x – 12 = 100 or 2x = 112 or x = 56%.
If Party D got 56% of the votes, then Party got (56 – 12) = 44% of the total votes.
44% of the total votes = 132,000
i.e. T = 300,000 votes.
The margin by which Party R lost the election = 12% of the total votes = 12% of 300,000 =
36,000. Option (b)

7. Today John is twice as old as Frank and Sam is 2 years younger than Frank. Four years ago John
was 4 times as old as Sam. How old is John now?
(a) 18 (b) 20 (c) 24 (d) 16
Solution
Let us call the current age of John, Frank and Sam as J, F and S.
Age of John and Frank today are in the ratio = 1:2 which means J = 2F.
Age of Sam S = F – 2.
Age of John 4 years ago = J‐4 = 4 times the age of Sam 4 years ago.
J – 4 = 4 (S – 4) => 4S = J + 12
Substitute S = F – 2 into the equation
4(F‐2) = J + 12
4F – 8 = J + 12
Substituting J = 2F in the equation as 4F = 2J
2J – 8 = J + 12
J = 20
John is 20 years old now. Option (b)

8. A number on subtracting 15 from it, reduces to its 80% what is 40% of that number?

The first person shakes hands with n‐1 people
The second person shakes hands uniquely with n‐2 people
The similarly third person shakes hands uniquely with n‐3 people
(n‐1) th person shakes hands uniquely n‐(n‐1) people = 1 person
Total handshakes (n‐1) + (n‐2) + ( n‐3) + (n – n+1)
Total handshakes = n*n – ( 1+2+3...n) = 15
n*n ‐ n (n+1)/2 = 15
Solving: n^2 – n = 30 The two roots of the quadratic equation are n = 6 or n=‐5
since n is positive n = 6 . There are 6 people in the room Option (d)

100 lines of code in 10 minutes. He takes a break for five minutes after every ten minutes. How
many lines of codes will he complete typing after an hour?
(a) 200 (b) 250 (c) 300 (d) 350
Solution

Since the engineer has to take 5 min break after every 10 min of work, he would take about 4
breaks in an hour = 20 minutes of break time. Hence the remaining work time is 40 minutes. For
every 100 lines of code he needs to think for 5 minutes and type for 10 minutes. i.e. effectively
every block of 100 lines of code would take 15 minutes of work time. So in 30 minutes he can
type 200 lines of code. In the remaining 10 minutes, 5 minutes goes for thinking and 5 minutes
for typing. In 5 minutes he can type only 50 lines of code. Hence the total code type =
