How do you manage project requirements?

● Standard Approaches
○ Extensive Word or Google Docs files
○ Excel spreadsheets
○ Email
● Collaborative Approaches
○ JIRA and Confluence
○ Trello
○ Quip
○ Sharepoint

114
The Reality of Evolving Requirements

● Requirements evolve over the course of a project

● At the start, a high level concept is identified
● At the end, the details are well known and implemented (hopefully)
● Project teams need a way to collaborate, elaborate and evolve requirements
● Managing requirements in a single Word document on a file server or
someone’s laptop is VERY difficult

115
Requirement Management Options
1. Confluence Product Requirements Template

2. Requirement Traceability Matrix

116
Requirement Traceability Matrix with JIRA

● Use Confluence to
document high level
needs
● Decompose
high-level
requirements into
smaller user stories

or you can insert a link to another
Confluence page

2. To add a link, simply copy the URL of the

user stories, tasks or items for the product
backlog

Teams can use Jira and Confluence to

document requirement details and manage the
work

125
Step 6. Insert the Jira issues into the table

1. Copy the Jira URL

2. Paste the URL into the Jira
3. Confluence will convert the URL to a card

● As tasks complete, the JIRA issue will be updated with task status.
● Including the JIRA tickets with the original requirement ensures no
requirements are missed
● Effective method to sort by release and discuss priorities with stakeholders
● Effectively trace requirements from concept to delivery as requirements
evolve
