Reading Passage (A2–B1 Level)

Many people think that clothes are only for keeping us warm or protecting us from the weather. However, clothes are
much more important than that. They can show our personality, culture, and even our mood. The clothes we wear
every day often tell other people something about us before we even speak.
When people are young, they usually enjoy wearing fashionable clothes. Teenagers often follow the latest trends
because they want to look modern and fit in with their friends. They may spend a lot of time choosing a new jacket,
pair of shoes, or handbag. Sometimes, they buy clothes simply because they are popular on social media, even if they
do not really need them. As a result, some young people have wardrobes full of clothes that they hardly ever wear.
Adults often have different reasons for choosing clothes. Many people think about comfort before fashion. For
example, office workers usually wear smart clothes because they want to look professional. On the other hand, people
who work outdoors may choose comfortable and strong clothing that can protect them from the sun or rain. At home,
most people prefer simple clothes because they help them relax after a busy day.
The weather also affects what people wear. In hot countries, light clothes made from cotton are very popular because
they help people stay cool. During winter, people wear thick coats, sweaters, scarves, gloves, and boots to keep warm.
In some places where the weather changes quickly, people often carry a jacket with them even on sunny days.
Nowadays, online shopping has changed the way people buy clothes. Instead of visiting a shopping centre, many
people use their phones or computers to order clothes from home. Online shopping saves time and sometimes offers
lower prices. Customers can compare many products in just a few minutes. However, buying clothes online also has
disadvantages. The size may not fit, the colour may look different from the pictures, or the material may not be as
good as expected. Because of these problems, many people still enjoy shopping in traditional stores where they can try
clothes on before buying them.
Another important topic is fast fashion. Some clothing companies produce new styles every week and sell them at very
low prices. This encourages people to buy more clothes than they actually need. Unfortunately, making cheap clothes
uses a lot of water, energy, and other natural resources. In addition, many old clothes are thrown away after being
worn only a few times, creating large amounts of waste. Because of this, more people are becoming interested in
sustainable fashion. They choose to buy fewer but better-quality clothes, repair old ones, or shop at second-hand
stores. Some people even exchange clothes with friends instead of buying new ones.
In the future, clothes may become even smarter. Scientists are developing special fabrics that can change colour,
measure body temperature, or even charge small electronic devices. Although these clothes are still expensive, they
may become more common in the coming years.
In conclusion, clothes are an important part of our daily lives. They help us stay comfortable, express our personal
style, and prepare for different situations. By choosing our clothes carefully and avoiding unnecessary shopping, we
can save money and also protect the environment.
