Circulatory System Answer
1. The heart functions as a muscle responsible for pumping blood throughout the
body so that every cell receives the oxygen and nutrients it needs to survive.
2. Valves serve to control the direction of blood flow so that blood flows only in the
correct direction and does not flow backward.
3. Arteries carry oxygen-rich blood away from the heart to be circulated throughout
the body.
4. Veins carry blood back to the heart.
5. Capillaries serve as a link between arteries and veins. This is where nutrients and
oxygen are delivered to the body’s cells, and where carbon dioxide and waste
products are removed from the cells.
6. Red blood cells carry oxygen throughout the body with the help of a chemical called
hemoglobin (which also gives our blood its red color).
7. White blood cells act as the body’s defenders, fighting, attacking, and destroying
germs, bacteria, or viruses that cause illness when we are sick.
8. Blood platelets help the blood clotting process to stop bleeding when we get
injured.
9. Blood plasma carries proteins, nutrients, and hormones throughout the body and
transports waste products from the body’s cells for elimination.
10. Blood plasma carries waste products to the kidneys. The kidneys filter and
remove these waste products from the body.
