1. CONTACT WITH THE LECTURER

Students who encounter any difficulties with their studies should not hesitate to contact the
lecturer concerned via e-mail, by telephone or by personal visit (during consulting hours
or after making an appointment). Always bear in mind that the lecturer in charge knows
more about matters regarding this module than any other person, so please do not contact
other people if you experience problems with this module as you may not always get the
necessary guidance that you are entitled to. Your lecturer is always eager to help you.

2. ENQUIRIES

Students are discouraged from directing issues directly to the head of the department. All
issues should be raised first with the staff member in charge. All issues that must be
directed to the HOD must be channeled through the secretary. In order to facilitate follow
up, student names and numbers should always be given when making inquiries.

3.1. Departmental Matters

Inquiries relating to studies and academic issues should be directed to the course
coordinator for the module. The name of the course coordinator is given in table 1.

3.2. Administrative Matters

All administrative matters should always be directed to the Head of the department via the
secretary.

3.3. Addressing of Enquiries

Inquiries by telephone should be directed to numbers listed above.

3.4. Assessment and Related Issues

Issues relating to assessment should be directed to the course coordinators. If necessary
the course coordinator must bring issues to the attention of the HOD.

4. SYLLABUS
The syllabus for this module is set out on the School calendar.

5. TUTORIAL MATTER
On enrolment an inventory for the current academic year will be received. This inventory
will list all the material required for the course as outlined in table below.

6. PRESCRIBED TEXTBOOK

The prescribed textbooks for this module is Numerical Analysis 9th Ed., by Richard L
Burden: J. Douglas Faires. ISBN-13: 978-0-538-73351-9.

The University does not provide copies of this book. Students are expected to obtain their
own copies from the book-shop. As most of the study material for this module is included
in this book, it is essential to have access to a copy. Arrangements must therefore be made
immediately to obtain a copy.

7. OTHER RECOMMENDED BOOKS

As all the material required for this module is included in the tutorial matter and the
prescribed textbook no other books are specifically required. However, students are
encouraged to consult any relevant books for additional examples and a different way of
presentation - consult the index for the topics that you are interested in. A list of other
recommended books is given in the table below.

Other Recommended Books

 NUMERICAL METHODS, 3rd Ed., by Jeffrey R. Chasnov
 Any other textbook supporting web development available in the University library.

8. ASSESSMENT
This section must be read in conjunction with rules in sections G13 – G24 of the
School/University rules.

8.1. Components of Continuous Assessment

The module is weighed by means of continuous assessment, consisting of assignments,
tutorial tests, tests, examination, re-examination and/or special-examination.
Students are required to attain at least 40% in all formative assessments for examination
admission. The module will be evaluated as follows:

Semester Mark

The Semester Mark will be calculated as follows:

Assignments and tutorial tests 20%
Tests 80%
Total 100%

Module Code: MAPM012 Module Name: NUMERICAL METHOD I Page 4 of 8

Examination Mark
The Exam Mark will be calculated as follows:
Written paper 100%

Total 100%
Final Mark
The Combined Mark will be calculated as follows:
Semester Mark 60%
Examination Mark 40%
Total 100%

8.2. Class Work

The duration of the lecture period is 40 minutes.

8.3. Assignments
There will be practice assignments.

8.4. Group Work

Group work would be encouraged, especially in assignments.

8.5. Tests
There will be written tests for this module.

8.6. Examinations
A semester-end examination will be written for the module. Assessment by examination
contributes 40% to the overall assessment.

8.7. Exemption from examinations

None

8.8. Re-examinations
Only students who fail to meet the examination and continuous assessment requirements
of 50% pass and meeting re-examination condition will be allowed to sit. One semester-end
re-examination will be scheduled for the module. Assessment by re-examination
contributes 50% to the overall assessment.

8.9. Admission to the Examination

Not all students are entitled to write the standard examination, only students with a year
mark of 40% or higher will be admitted to the standard examination.

8.10. Admission to the Re-Examination

The results of the standard examination will be made available within a short time after the
examination. Only students who obtain an overall assessment mark of between 45% and
49% will be permitted to write the supplementary examination or re-examination. Also, if a
student gets less than 40% exam mark but have an overall final mark of above 50%, will
sit for re-examination.
