MY GIRLFRIEND IS A HIV POSITIVE

I have been dating a beautiful girl for more than three years, a happy go lucky girl
with a fine physique and much prettier than anyone else I had ever seen. She is a lovely girl,
adorable and cares so much about me. I deeply admitted that she is a blessing from above and
the greatest heavenly gift I had ever received. We love each others and we had a long term
plan for our future. We planned to get married and start a family of our own, with kids and
with ourselves always by our side. But the problem that we had faced is not a common
problem that will be gone someday. It is rather a serious problem which can change our
whole future and our lives as well.
Since we are planning to get married, we wanted to know our current health
conditions. For this, we consulted a doctor and we went through several investigations among
which HIV test was also included. The result came out to tell that my girlfriend was infected
with the deadly virus. We were shocked and out of words. This really is a catastrophe for
both of us since our future can be entirely changed. Our first impression was full of stress and
we do not know what to do or what not to do. We simply try to figure out what to do for the
next step.
As suggested by our families, we first visited a counselor. The counselor told us about
the virus and what steps we have to take to improve our conditions. He told us that proper
care and treatment can make our lives normal and made us aware about the antiretroviral
therapy. So, after being aware of the virus itself, we returned home with determination to
fight back together.
Though I had said that we will fight back together, I cannot be quiet sure about
whether or not to proceed with our relationship. Since we planned to get married, it is super
hard to break our relationship and part our ways. On the contrary, the sad news made me
reluctant to go any further. However, I had no courage to intimate those feelings to her, since
it can hurt her emotionally. It took me days to finally make up my mind and move on. Then, I
decided that I will go on with the relationship and take good care of her and fight for her.
Firstly, I consulted several doctors to know more about HIV/AIDS and the ways and
measures to take care of the patients. I took my girlfriend to the nearest government hospital
and registered her at the ART center. She regularly took treatment from there and we had a
regular check on her CD4 and viral load counts. All we can do is to maintain the normalcy of
her counts and to take regular dose of antiretroviral therapy (ART).
Since we are told that CD4 count can be maintained by eating balanced diet and
having regular exercise, we are more concerned about physical fitness and diet. I took her for
regular exercise and gave her healthy foods to stabilize her immunity. She should not have
stress and should have a good sleep. This is really a challenge for me since I am, to a great
extend, responsible for her mood and temper. But, hopefully we can manage to fulfill the
requirements necessary for her health.
Also, to maintain her viral load counts we make sure that she took the required dose
of ART. Since this in the only treatment to maintain her viral count, it is most important to
ensure that it is taken regularly. Though we struggled to maintain the timing of consumption
at first, repetition makes her habituated and now she rarely forgot about it.
The next step that we take is to strengthen her spiritually. Since heaven is our only
hope, we take steps to get ourselves nearer to God. We regularly attended church services and
goes for pastoral counseling regularly. Regular personal devotions and quiet times are given
importance to keep us fit spiritually.
Though this disease is fatal and cannot be cured, we are sure that we will be able to
fight it back and continue to enjoy our lives at the fullest. Though this misfortune headed
towards us and struck us, we believe that we can get through this hard time out of love and
with God by our side.
