Does Technology Have a Positive or Negative Influence on Education?
Technology has transformed education by making learning more accessible, interactive,
and flexible. Students today use computers, smartphones, online learning platforms, and
digital libraries to complete assignments and conduct research. These tools have changed
how teachers teach and how students learn. Although technology can sometimes create
distractions and expose students to unreliable information, its overall influence on
education is positive when it is used responsibly.
One of the greatest benefits of technology is that it provides students with easy access to
information. In the past, students relied mainly on textbooks and physical libraries.
Today, they can access millions of educational resources through online databases, e-
books, academic journals, and educational websites. This allows learners to study
anytime and from almost anywhere. Technology also supports distance learning, making
education available to students who may not be able to attend traditional classrooms. As a
result, learning has become more flexible and inclusive.
Technology also improves the quality of research and academic work. Students can
access peer-reviewed journals and reliable scholarly sources instead of depending on
unverified information found on random websites. According to Kelly et al. (2014), “Peer
review improves the quality of scientific publications by helping identify errors, improve
clarity, and strengthen research findings” (p. 228). This demonstrates the importance of
using credible academic resources when conducting research. Learning how to evaluate
reliable sources helps students develop stronger critical thinking and academic writing
skills.
Despite these advantages, technology also presents challenges. Social media, online
games, and entertainment websites can distract students from their studies if they are not
disciplined. In addition, not all information found online is accurate or trustworthy.
Students must learn to verify information by using credible sources, especially those
provided through academic libraries. Teachers also play an important role in guiding
students to use technology responsibly and ethically. When students develop good digital
habits, the risks associated with technology can be significantly reduced.
In conclusion, technology has had a mostly positive influence on education. It expands
access to knowledge, supports high-quality research, and provides flexible learning
opportunities for students around the world.
Although technology has some disadvantages, such as distractions and misinformation,
these challenges can be managed through responsible use and critical thinking. Overall,
technology remains one of the most valuable tools for improving education in the modern
world.
