CBSE Class XII Economics Project

Topic: Demonetization

Introduction
Money is the backbone of every economy. Demonetization refers to the withdrawal of the legal
tender status of a currency note or coin by the government. In India, the most significant
demonetization took place on 8 November 2016, when ■500 and ■1000 notes were withdrawn.
The stated objectives included curbing black money, eliminating counterfeit currency, promoting
digital payments, improving tax compliance and encouraging a formal economy. This project
studies the meaning, objectives, implementation, impact, advantages, disadvantages and long-term
effects of demonetization.

Meaning
Demonetization is the process of making a particular denomination of currency invalid as legal
tender. Citizens are generally allowed to exchange or deposit old notes within a specified period.

History
India experienced demonetization in 1946, 1978 and 2016. The 2016 exercise affected around 86%
of the value of currency in circulation and was one of the largest monetary reforms in the country's
history.

Objectives
• Reduce black money.
• Eliminate counterfeit currency.
• Disrupt illegal financing.
• Encourage digital payments.
• Improve tax compliance.
• Promote a formal economy.

Implementation
The announcement was made on 8 November 2016. Old ■500 and ■1000 notes were withdrawn.
Citizens deposited or exchanged old notes through banks. New ■500 and ■2000 notes were
introduced by the RBI.

Impact
Short-term effects included cash shortages, pressure on banks, disruption to agriculture, small
businesses and informal employment. Positive developments included rapid growth in digital
payments, increased banking activity and greater financial awareness.

Advantages
Growth of digital transactions, increased tax compliance, better financial inclusion, improved
banking liquidity, greater transparency and temporary reduction in fake currency.

Disadvantages
Cash shortages, long queues, hardship in rural areas, temporary slowdown in consumption and
business activity, and difficulties for daily wage workers and small enterprises.

Long-term Effects
Digital payments continue to grow. Banking habits improved, transparency increased and
discussions on financial reforms became more prominent. Economists remain divided on the overall
economic impact.
Conclusion
Demonetization was a major economic reform with both benefits and challenges. It accelerated
digital payments and formalization while also causing short-term disruption. It remains an important
case study in Indian economics.
