Goodafternoon! You’ re watching Science News Today.
Our top story todaytakes us back to1859, when Charles Darwin published On the Origin
of Species, introducingthe Theory of Evolution through Natural Selection.
This book introducedthe Theory of Evolution through Natural Selection, which changed
the wayscientists understand the origin and developmentof livingorganisms.
More than 160 years later, Darwin’ s theory continues to influence biology, medicine,
genetics, andenvironmental science.

Thank you, Anchor.
Today,we are revisitinga scientificbreakthrough thatforever changed our
understandingof life on Earth.
In 1859,English naturalist Charles Darwin published his famous book, On the Origin of
Species.
In this book, Darwin explainedthat living organisms are notfixed or unchanging. Instead,
they gradually evolve over manygenerations through a process callednatural selection.
Natural selection means that organisms with characteristics thathelp them survive and
reproduce are more likely to pass those traits on to their offspring. Over millions of years,
these small changes accumulate, resulting in the evolution of species.
Before Darwin’ s theory, manypeople believed thatevery species hadexistedin its
present form since creation. His ideas challenged these traditional beliefs andopeneda
new direction for scientific research.
To better understand the impactof Darwin’ s work,we’ re joined by a biology
professor.
BIOLOGY PROFESSOR / SCIENCE EXPERT
Charles Darwin’ s Theoryof Evolution is consideredone of the foundations of modern
biology.
Although the theorywas highly controversial when itwas firstpublished, ithas since
been supportedbyevidence from genetics, fossil records, comparative anatomy,
embryology,and DNA research.
Today, evolution helps scientists understandhowdiseases develop, whybacteria
become resistantto antibiotics, how new species form, and how livingorganisms adapt
to changingenvironments.
Darwin’ s work continues to guide scientific discoveries andremains an essential part
of biology education aroundthe world.

Thank you, Professor.
Darwin’ s ideas not onlytransformed science butalso encouragedpeople to question
long-held beliefs using observation, evidence, andcritical thinking.
Although debates surroundedhis theory in the 19th century, ithas become one of the
most well-supported scientific explanations in modern science.
Back to you, Anchor. NEWS ANCHOR (Closing) Thank you,Reporter.
The publication of On the Origin of Species in 1859 marked the beginning of whatwe
now call the Darwinian Revolution.
More than a century later, Charles Darwin’ s Theoryof Evolution continues to shape
scientific research, education, medicine, agriculture, and environmental conservation.
His work reminds us thatscience advances through careful observation, evidence, and
the willingness to challenge existingideas.
