Science Questions and Answers

The document provides a series of questions and answers related to the properties of materials, focusing on concepts such as solutes and solvents, the differences between dissolving and melting, and methods for accurate liquid measurement. Key points include that water is the solvent in a sugar solution, dissolving involves two substances while melting involves one, and accurate liquid measurement requires specific techniques. Additionally, it clarifies that a cloudy mixture with visible lumps does not constitute a solution.

Properties of Materials – Questions and Answers

1. In a solution of sugar and water, which is the solvent and which is the solute?
Answer:
• Solvent: Water
• Solute: Sugar
Explanation: The solvent is the substance that does the dissolving (usually present in a larger
amount). The solute is the substance that is dissolved.

2. What is the difference between dissolving and melting?

Answer: Dissolving is when a substance mixes evenly with a liquid to form a solution. Melting is
when a solid changes into a liquid because it is heated.
Difference:
• Dissolving involves two substances (a solute and a solvent).
• Melting involves only one substance changing from solid to liquid due to heat.

3. What mass of salt solution is made when 9 g of salt is dissolved in 50 g of water? Explain how
you worked out your answer.
Answer: 59 g.
Working: Mass of solution = Mass of solute + Mass of solvent = 9 g + 50 g = 59 g.

4. A green powder was placed into a beaker of water. After it was stirred, the water looked cloudy
and lumps of powder could still be seen. Has a solution been formed? Explain your answer.
Answer: No, a solution has not been formed.
Explanation: A solution is clear and the solute dissolves completely. Since the water is cloudy and
lumps of powder are still visible, the powder has not completely dissolved.

5. When measuring the volume of a liquid, what should you do in order to make your measurement
as accurate as possible?
Answer:
• Use a measuring cylinder.
• Place it on a flat, level surface.
• Read the volume at eye level.
• Read the bottom of the meniscus (the curved surface of the liquid).
Explanation: This gives the most accurate measurement.
