= -4 = 23

2. 11 + 14 – 2 = ___ 3. -12 – 5 – 10
= -17 – 10
Answer: 11 + 14 – 2 = -27
= 11 + 12
= 23

3. -12 – 5 – 10 = ___

Answer: -12 – 5 – 10
= -17 – 10
= -27

numerical expressions, follow the order of
operations according to the GEMDAS Rule.

Step 1. Any calculation that comes inside the

Grouping symbol should be done first. This
includes parenthesis ( ( ) ), brackets ( [ ] ), and
braces ( { } ). If you have all these three grouping
symbols perform first ( ), then [ ], and lastly { }.
Example: 18 + {2 + 3 (6 –1 × 2)}
= 18 + {2 + 3 (6 – 2)}
= 18 + {2 + 3 (4)}
= 18 + {2 + 12}
= 18 + 14
= 32

Step 2. After solving operations inside the

parenthesis or groupings (if any), exponents,
roots, and absolute valued will be calculated from
left to right.
Example: 3 × (5 – 2)² + 4
= 3 × 3² + 4
=3×9+4
= 27 + 4
= 31

Step 3. Perform multiplication or division,

whichever comes first when calculating from left to
right.
Example: 12 ÷ 3 × 4
= 12 ÷ 3 × 4
=4×4
= 16 is the correct answer. (rather than
12 ÷ 12 = 1).

Step 4. Lastly, perform addition or subtraction,

whichever comes first when calculating from left to
right.
Example: 12 – 3 + 4
= 12 – 3 + 4
=9+4
= 13 is the correct answer. (rather than 12
– 7 = 5).

8 – 3 × 2 = 2.
Solution: Following GEMDAS since there is no
Grouping and no exponent, we start with
Multiplication and Subtraction ( whenever comes

Simplify: 8 – 3 × 2 (Multiplication)
= 8 – 6 ( Subtraction)

containing 24 apples at ₱5 each. She also
bought 2 boxes of bananas at ₱280 per
box. If she gives the cashier ₱1000, how
much change should she receive?

Answer: ₱1000 – (₱5 × 3 × 24) – (2 × ₱280)

= 1000 – (5 × 3 × 24) – (560)
= 1000 – (5 × 72) – 560
= (1000 – 360) – 560
= 640 – 560
= 80 or ₱80.
