Assignment No: 2: Molecular Diffusion in Fluids

Date of assigned: 03/08/2026

Date of Submission: 21/08/2026

Marks BT COs
Q.1 State Fick's First Law of diffusion and explain the
02 U BE05005021.01
physical significance of the diffusion coefficient.
Q.2 Explain how temperature and pressure affect the
diffusivity of gases. Support your answer with suitable 03 N BE05005021.01
examples.
Q.3 Differentiate between steady-state diffusion of A through
stagnant (non-diffusing) B and steady-state equimolar 03 N BE05005021.01
counter diffusion of A and B.
Q.4 Carbon dioxide (CO₂) and air are undergoing steady-state
equimolar counter diffusion through a straight tube of 50
mm internal diameter and 1 m length. The total pressure
is 1 atm and the temperature is 25°C. The partial pressure
of CO₂ at one end of the tube is 190 mmHg and at the
other end is 95 mmHg. The diffusivity of the CO₂–air 05 A BE05005021.01
system is 0.16×10−4 m2/s.
Calculate:
(a) The mass transfer rate of CO₂ (kg/s)
(b) The mass transfer rate of air (kg/s)
Q.5 A service station attendant accidentally spills 50 L of
gasoline, which quickly spreads uniformly over a
horizontal surface having an area of 8 m². Estimate the
time required for complete evaporation of the gasoline
into stagnant air above the liquid surface.
Data Given:
 Diffusivity of gasoline vapour in air, DAB= 0.65 m2/h
07 A BE05005021.01
 Temperature = 298 K
 Total pressure = 1 atm
 Vapour pressure of gasoline at 298 K = 76 mmHg
 Density of gasoline = 720 kg/m³
 Molecular weight of gasoline = 200 kg/kmol
 Assume that evaporation occurs through a stagnant
air film of 2 m thickness.
