The National Training on the Science of Learning and the SOLO Framework:
Better Teaching and Better Instructional Supervision for Better Schools, held on April
20–22, 2026, in Baguio City, provided participants with a comprehensive understanding of
evidence-based teaching practices grounded in the Science of Learning and the Structure of
Observed Learning Outcomes (SOLO) Framework. The three-day training aimed to
strengthen teachers' and instructional leaders' competencies in designing, delivering, and
supervising instruction that promotes deeper learning, critical thinking, and improved learner
outcomes. The sessions emphasized the importance of aligning instructional practices with
current research on how learners acquire, process, and retain knowledge while ensuring that
learning experiences progressively develop higher-order thinking skills.
A major highlight of the training was the in-depth discussion of the Science of
Learning, which explored key concepts such as cognitive load, attention, memory, retrieval
practice, spaced learning, metacognition, motivation, and the role of prior knowledge in
meaningful learning. Resource speakers demonstrated how these research-based principles
can be effectively integrated into classroom instruction to enhance learner engagement,
improve knowledge retention, and support long-term academic success. Interactive
workshops enabled participants to analyze classroom scenarios and develop instructional
strategies that are aligned with how the brain naturally learns.
The training likewise provided extensive discussions on the SOLO Framework as a
tool for curriculum planning, lesson design, assessment, and instructional supervision.
Participants learned how to formulate learning objectives, classroom activities, and
assessment tasks that correspond to the levels of cognitive complexity—Unistructural,
Multistructural, Relational, and Extended Abstract. Collaborative workshops allowed
participants to redesign lesson plans and assessment tools using the SOLO Framework to
ensure constructive alignment between intended learning outcomes, teaching strategies, and
learner assessment. The sessions also highlighted the role of instructional leaders in
mentoring teachers and providing evidence-based feedback that promotes continuous
instructional improvement.
Overall, the National Training significantly enhanced my professional competence as
a Master Teacher I by deepening my understanding of the Science of Learning and the
SOLO Framework as complementary approaches to improving teaching effectiveness and
instructional supervision. The knowledge, skills, and best practices gained from the training
will be applied in classroom instruction, mentoring and coaching teachers, conducting

Learning Action Cell (LAC) sessions, reviewing lesson plans and assessment tools, and
providing technical assistance to teachers. Furthermore, I intend to echo the training through
school-based professional development activities to support the continuous improvement of
instructional practices and contribute to the achievement of quality, learner-centered
education in West Palale National High School.
