The National Training on the Foundations of the Science of Learning: Better Teaching and
Better Instructional Supervision for Better Schools (Part 2) officially commenced on the
afternoon of April 17, 2026. The opening session focused on "The Context: Teaching and
Learning in the Philippines," which provided participants with a comprehensive
understanding of the current educational landscape and the realities affecting teaching and
learning in the country. The discussion emphasized the importance of addressing learning
gaps, improving instructional quality, promoting equitable access to education, and
strengthening teacher competencies to meet the diverse needs of Filipino learners. It also
highlighted the role of evidence-based instructional practices in achieving improved learner
outcomes and supporting the goals of the Department of Education.

Following the contextual discussion, the participants engaged in a review of the Foundations
of the Science of Learning, revisiting the key concepts introduced during Part 1 of the
training. The session reinforced the principles of how the brain acquires, processes, stores,
and retrieves information, emphasizing the significance of attention, memory, cognitive load,
prior knowledge, motivation, and meaningful learning experiences. The resource speakers
underscored the importance of applying research-based teaching strategies that align with
how learners naturally learn, enabling teachers and instructional supervisors to make
informed decisions that enhance classroom instruction and learner achievement.

The interactive discussions and reflective activities provided participants with the opportunity

sharing and guided reflections, participants identified effective instructional strategies that
promote deeper understanding, learner engagement, and long-term retention of knowledge.
The session also emphasized the critical role of instructional supervision in fostering

Overall, the first day of the training strengthened my understanding of the educational context
in the Philippines and reaffirmed the importance of integrating the principles of the Science
of Learning into classroom instruction and instructional supervision. The knowledge and
insights gained from the sessions will serve as a valuable foundation in enhancing my
teaching practices, supporting fellow teachers through instructional coaching, and promoting
evidence-informed strategies that contribute to improved learner outcomes in our school.
