Major ADAS applications and their role in improving safety
Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) are a growing
category of in-vehicle systems designed to enhance driving
safety and convenience by assisting drivers in various
driving tasks and situations. These systems leverage a
combination of sensors, cameras, radar, and Lidar
technologies to gather real-time information about the
vehicle's surroundings and provide appropriate warnings or
interventions.
Here's a breakdown of major ADAS applications, their
functionalities, underlying sensor technologies, and their
role in improving vehicle safety and driver assistance:
1. Lane departure warning (LDW) and lane-keeping assist
(LKA)
• Function:
o LDW: Alerts the driver when the vehicle
unintentionally drifts out of its lane without using
the turn signal.
o LKA: Provides gentle steering input to help keep
the vehicle within its lane, building upon the basic
warnings of LDW.
• Sensor Technologies: Primarily utilizes cameras
mounted near the rearview mirror or on the dashboard
to detect lane markings (solid and dashed
white/yellow lines). Some systems may also
incorporate radar or infrared sensors.
• Role in Safety:
o Reduces the risk of accidents caused by driver
distraction or fatigue, especially during long
drives.
o Enhances driver awareness and encourages
attentive driving.
o Can potentially prevent collisions with vehicles in
adjacent lanes or objects on the side of the road.
o According to research studies, Lane Keeping
Assistance could potentially reduce crash
incidents by 19%.
2. Collision avoidance system (CAS)
• Function: Actively works to prevent potential
collisions by detecting obstacles and taking preventive
measures. This includes features like:
o Forward Collision Warning (FCW): Alerts the
driver of a potential collision with a vehicle or
obstacle ahead.
o Automatic Emergency Braking
(AEB): Automatically applies the brakes if the
driver fails to respond to an imminent collision
warning.
• Sensor Technologies: Relies on a combination of
radar, Lidar, and camera sensors to identify and track
objects, assess collision risks, and initiate appropriate
actions.
• Role in Safety:
o Significantly reduces the risk of rear-end
collisions and the severity of crashes.
o Can help avoid collisions with pedestrians and
other vulnerable road users.
o Studies have shown that AEB systems can reduce
rear-end collisions by about 40%, while FCW
systems can cut such crashes by 23%.
o According to research studies, AEB is the most
impactful ADAS technology, reducing three out of
the four most frequent accident categories.
3. Adaptive cruise control (ACC)
• Function: Automatically adjusts the vehicle's speed to
maintain a safe following distance from the vehicle
ahead. It responds to changes in traffic flow, unlike
traditional cruise control.
• Sensor Technologies: Primarily uses radar or Lidar
sensors to detect the distance and speed of vehicles
in front. Cameras can also enhance accuracy.
• Role in Safety: Reduces driver fatigue on long drives
and helps maintain a safe following distance, reducing
the risk of rear-end collisions. It can also contribute to
smoother traffic flow.
Other notable ADAS applications
Other ADAS applications include Blind Spot Detection
(BSD), which uses radar or sonar to warn of unseen
vehicles during lane changes; Parking Assistance, which
uses sensors and cameras to help with parking; Traffic Sign
Recognition (TSR), which identifies traffic signs using
cameras; and Driver Monitoring Systems (DMS), which
detect signs of driver drowsiness or distraction.

Role of sensors
ADAS heavily relies on sensors such as cameras, radar,
Lidar, and ultrasonic sensors to gather information about
the environment. Cameras detect objects and road
markings, radar measures speed and distance, Lidar
creates 3D maps, and ultrasonic sensors are used for
close-range detection like parking. GPS and connectivity
also provide location data.
Enhancing road safety and driver assistance
ADAS improves road safety by addressing human error.
These systems provide warnings and can take corrective
actions, helping drivers maintain control and awareness.
ADAS also enhances comfort by automating tasks and
reducing fatigue. The evolution of ADAS with AI and
machine learning is contributing to advancements towards
autonomous driving.
