MUMBAI METROPOLITAN REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT AUTHORITY
CONSTRUCTION OF PERMANENT HOUSES FOR R&R OF PAH UNDER MUIP
1.0 PREAMBLE
1.1 MMRDA has approved an integrated road development Master Plan for Mumbai City
and Suburbs with the objective of strengthening and augmenting the road network.
The road development Maser Plan involves construction of Flyovers/ROBs/RUBs,
Pedestrain and vehicular subways, Foot over bridges etc.
Implementation of various works under MUIP will also require R&R of about 35,000
households.
These tenements are being constructed under SRA scheme by the sub-developers in
their own land for which MMRDA will release only TDR as per Rules of SRA. The
sub-developers through their Architect and Structural Designer will prepare proposals
for the construction of permanent tenements.
Kirloskar Consultants Limited Pune are appointed as Consultants for Proof checking
of Designs prepared by sub-developers and supervision from time to time during
construction.
M/s. Piramal Holdings Pvt. Ltd., Mumbai - sub-developers are constructing 2304
Tenements inclusive of amenities at Plot No. Rhone Poulenc Compound CTS Nos.

2.4 CONSULTANTS INDEPENDENT WORKING
2.4.1 Safe Bearing Capacity
During the first site visit foundation work was going on at the site where the strata
could be examined. The strata encountered there was the hard murum to soft rock at
the depth of 3.0 m. Strata was wet with slight traces of water from which it can be
said that water table may exist at with in 1-2 m of foundation strata.
So considering the proximity of water table the safe bearing capacity of strata can be
taken as 30 t/m2, which is in acceptable limits.
Considering the foundation strata and range of foundation loads the type of
foundation most suitable is isolated footings resting on the bed rock.
2.4.2 Design Basis
The structure is the ground+7 storied residential complex located at Mumbai. The
plan dimension of the building are 38.36m x 12.86m and height of the building is
24.85m. The design will have to be done to achieve:
1) Minimum safety and serviceability requirements.
2) Ability to sustain the wind and earthquake loads.
3) Structural Durability.
The loads are estimated as per IS 875:1987 part 1,2,3 for dead load live load and
imposed loads.
Earthquake loads are estimated as per IS 1893:2002.
Design of concrete members is done as per IS456:2000.
Foundation design is done as per IS1904:1986.
Structural drawings are reviewed as per SP34.
2.4.3 Load Estimation.
Following loads are considered to be acting on the structure:
a) Dead Load
b) Imposed Load
c) Wind Load
d) Earthquake load
a) Dead load (As per IS875:1987 Part 1)
Dead load is basically due to the self-weight of the structure. Following unit weights
are considered while calculating the dead of the structure.
a. Reinforced Concrete : 25kN/m3
b. Plain Concrete: 24kN/m3
c. Brick masonry : 20kN/m3
/conversion/tmp/activity_task_scratch/[Link] (vsd) 4
d. Floor finishes/Plaster: 20kN/m3
b) Imposed Load (As per IS 875:1987 Part2)
Following superimposed loads are considered to be coming on the structure:
a. Live load (Residential floors) : 2.0 kN/m2
b. Live load (Toilet area) : 2.0 kN/m2
c. Live load (staircase, Corridor) : 3.0 kN/m2
d. Live load (lift machine room) : 7.5 kN/m2
c) Wind load (IS 875:1987 part 3)
Wind load is calculated for the basic wind speed of 44 m/sec for Mumbai
Design wind speed = Vz = Vb x k1 x k2 x k3
= 44 x 1 x 1 x 1
Design Wind pressure = 0.6 Vz x Vz
= 1161 N/m2 say 1200N/m2
d) Earthquake load
Mumbai lies in Zone III
Zone factor Alpha-g = 0.16
Importance factor = 1.0
As no ductile detailing is done Response reduction factor will be 3.0 i.e. ordinary
frame.
Based on this base shear is calculated and distributed at floor levels.
2.4.4 Load Combinations
Following load Combinations were considered:
1) D.L. + L.L.
1.51.5
2) D.L. + L.L. + W.L. (+/- x dir)
1.2 1.2 +/- 1.2
3) D.L. + L.L. + W.L. (+/- z dir)
1.2 1.2 +/- 1.2
4) D.L. + L.L. + EQ. L. (+/- x dir)
1.2 1.2 +/- 1.2
5) D.L. + L.L. + EQ. L. (+/- z dir)
1.2 1.2 +/- 1.2

2.1 Structural Analysis Approach
In the report submitted the structural analysis is done using space frame analysis approach.
As the building is rectangular in plan with regular grid of columns in both directions the simple plane
frame analysis approach in both directions can be used for analysis. Plane frames in longitudinal and
transverse directions are considered and modeled using STAAD3 software for structural. The analysis
results for various load combinations are used for design of structural components and reactions are
used for foundation designs.
Sample frames analyzed are shown here with the STAAD3 input and output results.

5.1 Design Review Comments
The structural Design basis Report submitted by System Consultants is reviewed in light of the independent
design calculations done. Following are the comments on the same.
5.2 Load Estimation and Load Combination
All the four loads i.e. Dead load, Imposed loads, Wind loads and Earthquake loads are taken in
account while estimating the loads. The loads are estimated as per the standard codal provisions
and fairly agrees with the independent estimations.
All possible load combinations with standard factors as per code are considered while applying the
loads on the structures.
5.3 Structural Analysis
Structural analysis is done by using space frame analysis approach.
The analysis results were checked by independent plane frame analysis in both directions.
The member forces calculated independently are in fare agreement with results submitted.
5.4 Design of Structural components
Space frame analysis results are used to calculate design forces for the individual member design.
The structural members –frame elements i.e. beams and columns designed satisfies the codal
requirements.
As IS 13920 is not used for detailing same is also not followed while sizing of members.
The independent sample design of member gives the results in fair agreement with the design details
given in the drawings.
The slab design and foundation design also are as per the standard codal requirements, satisfying
the safety and serviceability requirements.
5.5 Structural drawings and detailing
No ductile detailing is done as per IS13920 but same is accounted for while estimating the seismic
load i.e. Response reduction factor is taken as 3.0 while seismic load calculations. Also additional
bars are provided in the beams and column which account for ductility.
Covers mentioned in the design report defers from the actual given on the drawings which should be
reviewed. Specially cover for the beams shown on the drawings should be reviewed in light of the
width of the beam provided .
