Unit No. & Topic: Unit 2: Materials: Properties and Changes (Sections 2.1–2.4)

Major Goal: To develop learners' understanding of the properties of materials and the changes they

undergo. Students will investigate melting and boiling points, thermal and electrical conductivity,

reversible and irreversible changes, and apply scientific enquiry skills through observation,

prediction, fair testing, recording results, and drawing conclusions.

Objectives:

By the end of this unit, learners will be able to:

 Explain that melting point and boiling point are properties of substances.
 Differentiate between boiling and evaporation.
 Measure temperature accurately using a thermometer.
 Describe the properties of gases.
 Explain that thermal and electrical conductivity are properties of materials.
 Identify and classify materials as good or poor thermal and electrical conductors.
 Plan and carry out fair tests while following laboratory safety rules.
 Record observations and measurements in tables and present results using graphs.
 Describe reversible and irreversible changes with everyday examples.
 Use the particle model to explain reversible changes.
 Identify evidence of irreversible changes such as burning, rusting and cooking.
 Make predictions, analyse results and draw scientific conclusions based on evidence.
 Develop observation, communication, critical thinking and problem-solving skills through
practical investigations.
