CVEN3302 Structural Design Tutorial – Week 5
Question 1
Determine the design major axis section moment capacity of a 310UC118 of Grade
300PLUS steel which has a design axial compression force of N*= 180 kN.
Question 2
A beam-column AB of universal section is biaxially bend by design moments MAx = 120
kNm and MAy = 80 kNm at end A about the major (x) and minor (y) axes respectively. The
corresponding moments about end B are MBx = 60 kNm and MBy = 0 kNm, and bending is
in single curvature about both axes. The beam-column is also subjected to a design axial
compression of 70 kN. The length of the member is 4m, and its effective lengths are Lex =
4m and Ley = 5.5m.
Given the properties below, determine whether the beam-column is adequate for this
loading. Consider both section capacity and member capacity.
Note: The section is compact.

Question 3
Determine the maximum design value M* of a 200UC52.2 beam-column of Grade 300
steel which has a design axial compressive force of N*= 143.9kN, major axis (x-axis) end
moments of M* and 0.974M* causing reverse curvature bending, and minor axis (y-axis)
end moments of 0.4 M* and 0.4M* causing single curvature bending. Le = 7m for column
and beam buckling.

Question 4 (2010 Final Exam)
A 360UB56.7 beam-column of Grade 300 steel shown in Figure 4 is subjected to the design axial
compressive force of 150 kN, major axis (x-axis) end moments of 120 kNm and 100 kNm that
cause reverse curvature bending, and minor axis (y-axis) end moments of 50 kNm and 50 kNm
causing single curvature bending. Le = 8m for column and beam buckling. Determine the out-of-
plane member capacity of this beam-column.
